affordable & elegant system support ?
Posted by: Alco on 28 June 2002
Hi Y'all,
I'm searching for a new system support.
I'm tired of my old Sound-Factory "Tripod" rack.
The reason is: - you can't hide the wires.
- the (2)shelves are too far apart
- the bottom shelf is too low
- it looks kinda dull. (black with rough black fibre boards.
Now, ofcourse I checked out all the internet sites referring to HiFi furniture.
Most of the furniture is only available in (minimum) a 4 shelf support, or only in silver/glass.
The only supports that I do like is the German brand "Creactiv", but there seems to be not even one dealer in my area who's selling it.
(found out there's only 1 in Holland)
Ofcourse the Fraim is the best and also looks georgeous to me, but imho the price is ridiculous.
(Is Naim trying to scare of the common people, and aiming for the more welthy, millionaire's club of people ?!)
Target was the only company who had enough choice, and they had exactly the right piece of furniture for me, for resonable prices. (but...as you probably know...Target is no more!)
But....after getting sick and tired of searching for the system support that meet my requirements, (thinking it doesn't excist) I came around two Dutch magazines called "the Homestudio" in which every month a guy with a passion for music/HiFi person gets interviewed, including pics of his system.
Now, in two episodes of this magazine, I saw a guys system placed in a simple IKEA bedroom table(!)
Imho, it looks rather elegant and it has just the right amount of shelves I need (only 2) and the right dimensions) Available in 4 different (wood) feneers. It's lighweight and stable and the price is very low at only 20,- UKP!
Would it be a downgrade from my SF 'Tripod' support ?
Ofcourse, those small wheels would be replaced by spikes!!
Whatta guys think ?
Greetings,
Alco

Yes, it is the 'Corras'

Hi Stuart,
hmm, I must confess I never heard about Ash Design. (at least not here in Holland)
So I don't know what it looks like.
Is it possible to post a picture of you system support?

Well here's an arguement for you to consider.
Think of how much you have paid for your system components.
Firstly think of how much you intend to spend on your stand.
Now think of whether you'd be willing to spend another £200-300 to make your system sound a good deal better.
If you think that your answer is yes, buy a mana stand.

Supposing though that you find Mana to look hideous then I would also back up ash design, (check profile for piccy)
They do a range of sizes, mine is the bigger, they go to two or three levels, availble in a range of veneers.

Aluminium rods, wooden or MDF shelves available in a variety of finishes.
Fully modular in design - you can have a many shelves as you like, and the rods also come in different lengths.
The bog standard is a piece of furniture. The Ref bog seat version will make your kit sound better.

Steve.

One of Alco's main requirements is for the rack to look elegant. The general concensus is that the Quadraspire looks bloody awful. The most common expression being that it looks like a cheap 1950's tea trolly. I think Alco would not even give it a second look. It is a genuinely ghastly looking thing.
The Hutter looks good, sounds good but is a fairly large piece of furniture. It is aimed at those who place importance on visual appeal.
The base is about £133 and each layer is £100.
The quality of workmanship is examplementary.

Mick

Hi Y'all,
Thanx for all ya replies,

Well, this is one example how personal this matter actually is.
I like the looks of Quadraspire quite a lot!
(and I don't like the looks of Hutter)
In fact, some years ago when I had a simple setup consisting of Cyrus SL amp and a Cyrus dAD1 CD-player, I tried a (demo) cherry Quadraspire support, just because I liked the looks of it and the nice, high quality veneer.
I was surprised that it actually really did make a difference in sonic terms, even with such modest equipment.
About Mana: It looks HORRIBLE,imho. Way too industrial. In fact, I don't like racks with lots of metal and/or glass.
So....Stands Unique is also out of the question.
Another problem is....I don't live in good ol' Britain, but in Holland. Over here 99% of the HiFi stores only stock brands like Atacama,Apollo,Solid Steel or Soundstyle.
Most of these brand only have supports that start with 4 shelves. I only need 2. (3 would also be fine)
Damn,...why did Target have to leave...!?!?
(The had just the right stuff for me)
The most simple and afforable perfect support for me, would be the classic 80's SO 'table'. But they never show up on the Dutch SH market.
O,well I won't give up. one day I'll probably find a support that meets my requirements.
or I'll just check out the IKEA 'Corras'. It won't hurt my wallet for only 20,- UKP

Alco

I like the Quadraspire, it is affordable and looks very good (at least in my living room ...) ! I prefer its "non-technical" design.
There may be some better-sounding racks to buy
but the QS just works for me. Give it a try !

How about the BASE rack? I have one custom made in Canada with the same (improved design) which allows me to mass loaded the frame with lead shots. It works well with Naim equipment. My CD3 is on the top shell and resting on Mana Sound Frame support.
Posted on: 29 June 2002 by Alco
Hi Tuan,
Thanx for your reply, but imho BASE looks just a lot like the Tripod I'm using right now.
(so, to me it doesn't look as good as, for example, Quadraspire and also a BASE rack is too open, so I'd still see all the cables.)
I think I'll go for a Quadraspire or that IKEA 'Corras' table.
but first things first...I just ordered a new PC this afternoon, so I'll have to slow down and 'recover' from that financial 'punch in tha face'. Damn, I could've bought 2 QS supports for that money...
My PC is begging me to burry it, it's old and tired and giving errors all the time.
Thanx, Y'all
As soon as I do buy a new system support I'll post a picture in a new thread.

Alco

Sproggle Said:
" PS I tried putting my LP12 on an Ikea table I had once - I think it was called "Lack". How to turn a hi-fi into a music centre in one easy step..."
From other postings here on the forum I was under the impression that Lack tables were a good sounding and cheap option, at least for TT's. I had been considering making a multi shelf rack by shortening the legs of several Lack tables, spiking, and stacking them. Any consensus out there on whether Lack tables work well with TT's, and possibly other components?

Hi Sproggle,
I'm sure this is the table we're talking about:

I know that Mike Sae - on his informative web site - spoke positively of his experience with a Lack under his Planar 3 and I thought others have posted with positive experiences under an LP12 but perhaps it works better with as suspensionless TT. I haven't heard any comments re. use with other components so any more comments on the merits or Lack of would be interesting.o

Alco,
Although I recognize the Fraim is a "bit" expensive, it does add something... I found it worth saving for...
Arthur
Posted on: 30 June 2002 by Alco
Nice picture I must say Arthur!
I know that the Fraim would probably be the best in sonic terms.
I also like the looks of the Fraim, but imho it's price is ridiculous.
I'd have to pay about 1954,- euro for a 3 shelve Fraim support.
My maximum budget is about 1/4th of that!
I can't imagine the Fraim beying worth that huge price.
(ok, I haven't tried so I can't judge it, I can almost hear you say)
It's just as with the CDX. It's a hell of a CD-player,and I like it a lot, but I would never ever have paid the full price for it. It's definitely not worth 3900,- euro, imho. Same goes for the Fraim.
I would love to get my hands on one of these old SO tables though.
They're just the kinda thing I'm looking for.
A small, affordable(!),simple and good system support, that meets all my requirements.
(Yes, I even find 'em good looking in a way)
regards,
Alco

what can you tell us about those speakers in the picture...?

I think the speakers in the pic are 'Impulse', am I right ?

Alco
Posted on: 30 June 2002 by Arthur
are indeed from Impulse. They are the early Flinda Archon. They were made for the audio shop I bought my gear some 6 years ago. I've got number 5A and 5B from a series of 15, I believe it was.
They are no longer in production as far as I know. I like them quite a bit, although I'm also looking for something else. But that's more to find out what different speakers do when playing on the Naim set. I still miss the low registers a bit, even though the amp "tells" you it can go much lower than the speakers do. The highs are smooth, as are the mids. And that's what I like a lot about them.

I know what you're saying concerning price, but guess what. It was the rack with the highest WAF, so what I can I say... That made the budget adjustable in the right direction.
My own initial thoughts were on Finite Elemente, also for price reasons. Sometimes you're just lucky I suppose.

FWIW, my Planar 3 sounds better on a suitably spiked Lack than on the top shelf of my Mana rack. Honestly.

Mike is waaaaay beyond bollocks such as credibility

but my credibilty went out the window the day I couldn't figure out how to install a Mana glass.
I'm now free to post whatever I want.
I feel a rebel yell comin' on...

Alco,
The Quadraspire is a good price in terms of entry level. You only need to buy two shelves, one as an isolation platform (ie. just with spikes and top piece) and the other as a straight shelf with whatever height you like. Price would be around £140 and since you like the looks, you'll be happy all round.
That's the beauty of flexible systems like the Quadraspire and the downfall of fixed systems like Mana/Target/Soundstyle in my view.
Of course, you'll lose all the ferrous metal you're having to cope with at the moment - even the Corras might sound better than your current stand for this reason. If you insist on a Target-like rack, look at Sonus. They are some of the old Target people who setup Sonus to continue working with a reduced product offering.
Regards,
Frank.

I like Lack under my old Linn. Easily worth $9.95 (the US retail) if not more. I was a big improvement over the small wood chest that supported the LP12 before. However, you must put screws into the legs in order to level the thing.
I'm sure it's not state of the art, but I bet it's better than some and it's virtually free in hi-fi terms. If it was sold through hi-fi dealers it would probably be $65.
