Nait-2 with Kan's (Bad or good combination?)

Posted by: Alco on 01 March 2001

Hi fellas,

I read some very, very positive words on the
forum lately about the old Linn Kan's.

Now, my Naim-dealer is offering some old Kan's
for a very acceptable price.
As I still listen to my old beloved Nait-2 I
was wondering this:

Some people have the Nait-2/kans combination and
love it.
As I know, the Kan are pretty hard to drive I find it difficult to believe that the Nait-2 could drive Kan's decently.

(Since I'm a poor bloke,I'd have to rent a car if I want to listen to the Kan's at the dealer, so that's why I'm asking this on the forum first)

O,btw. it not possible for me to place kan's
(or any other speaker) close to the backwall.
So,...should I just forget about it or GO FOR IT?

Thanx y'all,

Greetings from Holland,

Alco.

Hi there, Mr. Pig

Thanx for your reply.

Well, the reason that I can't place Kan's close
to the wall is that there's a big ehhh, damn,
I don't know the Englsich word for it..
(the thing Santa Claus climbes trough..:o))
in between the speakers.
So if I would place the speakers close to the wall
it would distroy the soundstage. The sound would
come from out of the two speakers instead of a soundstage in between.

The distance between the kans and the wall could
be 30 cm. I guess that's too much,eh...

Unfortunately I can't place the speakers at another wall. (all doors and windows,etc..)

Well, thanx anyway.

Greetings,
Alco.

...place?

mazzel!

Hahaha, Thanx, Bas! ;o)

O,yeah, ofcourse. How could I forget that word..

Yep, it's the fireplace that's between my
speakers. So when I would move my speakers back
against the wall, they would both be in a corner
which would kill the soundstage and make the
speakers become very boomy..

Nah, I guess I better forget about that Kan thing.

If i can't do it 100% right, I better don't do it at all.

Greetings,
Alco.

I've got a large oak cabinet between my Royd Albions, and it definitely does NOT destroy the soundstage. Sounds still seem to come from between the speakers just fine.

It's not like a pot of soup. The sound doesn't have to mix between the speakers before travelling to your ears. Each speaker presents its program, and your ears do the rest of the magic.

One exception applies: highly reflective objects between the speakers might confuse the sound stage. I don't think you'll have a problem with your fireplace, though.

Thanx for your reply, Mike.

O,well. it seems that it's a matter of experimenting first..
Is it also a MUST that the Kan's be used
on the dedicated Kan-stands ?
I'm using some heavy Target HR-60's right now.

Greetings,

you appear to be describing the very set up that i had when i first got my kans, in the recesses either side of a (in my case, disused) fireplace in a converted flat in kentish town, nw london.
the kans sounded absolutely marvellous driven by 32/snaps/250.

the kans are a speaker that polarises into loathers and lovers -- it would be useful to know what other hifi systems you have listened to and liked. as you can tell, even though now i use SBL's in my main system, i am still very loyal to my Kans, currently driven by a nait3 (i dont think you should worry about power as such, the nait has enough current capability).

if the kans are going for a song, get them... if you dont like them, i can tell you there are plenty of buyers this side of the euro.

enjoy...
