The ARO--a Weighty topic

Posted by: Richard Paget on 14 February 2001

Hi
With my S/H ARO there was an Ortofon stylus scale
?is this original kit

I've been given advice(by a dealer) that they(stylus scales that is) under read and I should set my Troika at 1.9g to get 1.7g--is this rubbish?

The troika doesn't track well at 1.7g--but it may be faulty (very low output via k prefix)and is to return to Expert stylus(not there fault I must add)--so its hard to guage which sounds better
Original troika was rated at 1.5--1.7g if I remember correctly.

Advice most welcome

YEs, the Ortofon is original kit and yes its inacurate. I'd shoot for 2.0g indicated downforce to start with, and then play it by ear. If its dull and bassy there is too much downforce. Else too bright and prone to edginess too little downforce. I'd recommend you take the arm wand off when you tweak the tracking force. Happy listening.

Richard,

The problem is not with the scale. It is rather that given the geometry of the ARO the weight reading must be taken at the exact same height as the surface of the record. When you place your scale on the platter, the reading is taken quite a bit above that point, and in order to compensate for this error, you have to subtract about .2 gram from the reading you get. So, if the reading is 2 gram, then at the surface of the record the true force will be about 1.8 gram.

Pierre
this makes perfect sense.
It fits well with what the dealer commented on.I know absolute weight should be decided by your ears---but when you have no experience with the cartridge--a manufacturer recommended start weight
acurately dialed up--can be useful before you get your ears 'in' and especially if your having problems.
Am very surprised that this huge %error is not in the Naim manual(although my model is an earlier one)Not every ARO user would be happy to fiddle with the tracking weights--and we all know it makes a huge difference.Or that the scale is adjusted accordingly.
Strange??
