Building a Flexy stand

Have been looking at a lot of equipment racks lately and whilst I can't push to a Fraim or anything of that ilk, I don't like a lot of the other stands I've seen either.

So I've decided to build a Flexy stand.

Looking at the web page, someone has use acrylic sheets for the shelving which (IMO), looks better than the standard MDF. On that basis I've found a couple of firms that will sell the sheets, cut them to size and drill holes in them. There's been mentioned that they could have static build-up across the surface, could this be a problem or will I have to make sure that I earth the stand to dissipate any static, on the other hand, will I have to use thin metal strips across each shelf?

I've also thought to get the shelves to glow via the use of a laser/led source and fibre optics to get the light to each individual shelf, hopefully, won't look naff! Would anyone happen to know any companies that produce equipment to be able to do this?

This should be an interesting bit of experimentation.

Oops, almost forgot, any suggestion on sheet thickness? Have been looking at getting 15mm thick shelves.
