Ittok - B****X!! Urgent help required.

Posted by: Alex S. on 01 February 2002

In preparation for an important visitor I thought I'd be clever and remove the lowering device assembly of said tonearm (so many people advise this activity). Fine. But in so doing one has to raise the arm pillar to get the thing out. Fine. But. The 'V' thingy which now comprises a hole on one side (where I removed the gubbins) and the anti-skating ring on the other, moved when I retightened the arm. So. Now the bloody thing skates off to the right smartish when I try to play a record.

Please help. I will go for a lie down and return in the morning before anything irreparable happens.

Thanks in advance. Clear as mud?

Bit unlucky that. In all my years in the business never encountered such an event (though I did wipe the odd cantilever when badly hungover).
If I recall correctly there's a removable plate under the V shaped thingy, held on with a couple of screws. You'd have to remove the arm to get at it. Would take a braver man than me to venture in there, according to sods law as soon you open it 23 microscopic components spring out in all directions. Not sure how you'd recalibrate, probably one for Linn.

Good luck,

Willy.

Alex,

If I've read your post correctly, it sounds like the screw (that tightens the arm in the base) has come out of the slot in the arm pillar. this slot is 3mm wide and runs from the top of the pillar to bottom.

Try this. Loosen the screw (just enough to get the arm to move). Look at the arm pillar where the screw tightens and you should see the 'slot'. Make sure it's aligned with the screw, then set VTA and retighten the screw.

hope this helps.

cheers

I concur with Jim.

IME there's no point in bothering with the lift/lower unless you also remove the arm rest.

(What a 1980s nostalgia trip!)

I was being even more stupid and worrying about the location of the 'V' rather than the height of the arm - I'm presuming it has to be exactly horizontal to the vinyl plane, or am I yet more stupid than I thought?

BTW Paul - So I remove the rest and just leave the arm dangling over the side? Yikes!

Alex

Postscript: Sorted! The difference is awesome - almost as large as when I sawed all the locking rings off my late SNAICS ;0)

You can drop the rest back in when the turntable isn't in use. The arm rests quite stably on the bias dial when you're changing records.

It's another free upgrade.

Is that me?

Nice to be considered such wink

You could have course have been patient, and I would have arrived with my extra-miniature allen key, specially to do the job - I've just removed my raise / lower device in order to be primed for the job (I was fortunate that mine just slipped out without having to remove the arm).

Makes a big difference - less shouty, better controlled, may be my Klyde is OK after all.

I take it you don't need my toolkit after all smile

See you tomorrow,

Andy.

I may test the 'quite stably' theory. Shall I send the cantilever bits to you?

Yes please.

Will the arm lift over the rest 'as is'? You could have a trial run.
