Hi there,

There's got to be some hard core country music fans here on the Forum, can anybody point me towards a good restrospective of Hank Sr ?

Thanks

I never cared mucy for his whiny nasal voice or the the arrangements on his recordings, but covers of his material are (like those of R. Thompson)almost uniformally excellent- from a diverse selection of artistes including CCR, Linda Ronstadt, The Cowboy Junkies, and lately Norah Jones. I think somewhere in my collection I have also got a 'Tribute' album of covers done by contempory artists, but cant remember how much I liked it. I must really spend more time listening to music and less time reading about and buying it!!!

Well I also have heard his grandson Hank III, and if the boy has the voice of the the grandaddy then I guess I might find myself in the same position as you. Liking the songs but not liking the singer, maybe the tribute would be good enough.

Covers of Sr.? Oh my! A bit like 101 Strings play the music of Pink Floyd. I am sure that there are many wonderful covers of Hank Sr's music, but why get copies when you can have the real deal. The voice and the presentation are an integral part the music.

I have a double cd set called "HANK WILLIAMS The Ultimate Collection" on Mercury/UMG (UTVRECORDS 088 170 268-2). My compilation has 42 tracks. They are mostly studio cuts with several live broadcast recordings at the end. It was about $20.00 on sale. The same company also sells a 20 track cd for about $17.00. The 20 track disk has the really big hits and may have some different versions of some songs as the times don't always match. If you really wanted to go hog wild, you could pick up the 10 cd boxed set (same company). This has studio, live broadcast, and probably any thing else that the record company could find to justify the approximately $160.00 price tag. I'm sure that it is lovely.

The sound quality ranges from not too bad to pretty scratchy, but bear in mind that everything was recorded between 1947 and 1952.

There are plenty of other cd s of Hank's work as well. Do yourself a favor and get some real Hank!
