Which album should I start to buy?

I never really got past American Garage or Missouri Sky which I loved.

Me too. Both those, but This Way Up is an awesome masterpiece. His DSOFTM.
Don't overlook Lyle Mays' self titled first album, which is in my top 50. Probably better than any single PM album to be honest - Alaskan Suite being probably one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard.

Got most of the PM albums, but my faves are the earlier ones especially "Watercolours" and "Bright Size Life". A second vote for the Lyle Mays Albums too. Street Dreams is a very fine album and a superb recoding to boot.

Nuno

I have "Imaginary Day" and his solo effort "One quiet night". Both are very good.
"Imaginery Day" really sounds special on a good system. His solo cd is all acoustic and
late night listening material.

The Way Up is indeed brilliant, a masterpiece in my opinion and a singular achievement in human musical expression ... there is simply no other work like it in history.

Just want to point out that it was composed by both Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, as is the case with most of the PMG repertoire; Lyle deserves equal props.

All best,
Fred

Going to see him on Sunday at the Barbican.

I didn't know he was over here. Why isn't he playing Brighton? I saw The Way Up tour and it was overwhelming. Always try to catch Mr Methane when he's playing.

I rather like "As Falls Wichita", but for me the best PM album by far is "Offramp"; the track entitled "Are You Going With Me?" is sublime. The double live album is also worth checking out. As is the first album, "Pat Metheny Group", come to think of it. I felt he went off the boil a bit after (and including) "We Live Here".

CB

i guess when it comes to get a full picture of what that guy is capable you cannot leave out 80/81 on ecm. something completely different. 80/81 folksong 1 is something extraordinary in terms of building and sustain tension. tell you what. will put it on the deck right now.

having said that: i love american garage and the more recent stuff, also the duet with charlie haden.
