My wife and I have an Austrian friend who has settled in New Zealand with his wife. We talked cars once and he said, "I had a BMW once but I was having always problems". Perhaps it's just Austrian/German rivalry? I have known other people to have reliability problems with BMWs and wouldn't go near them again.

You don't buy them for reliability, you buy them for prestiege, bit like Jaguar once was.

I own a BMW motorbike, so have no Teutonic axe to grind.
This is one ugly car. I cannot believe they got the styling so wrong, when most other Bee Ems look so good.
John.

And on the subject of BMW styling: the 1 series - so so; the new 3 series - ok on the outside but the dash is hopeless; the new 5 series - well, the less said about that the better; the 7 series - hardly inspiring; the new 6 series - looks alright; the Z4 - looks good.

I am trying to work out the connection between the pope dies and bmw and the conclusion has to be that BMW's styling was inspired by the popemobile.

Martin;
I've had my R1100S for 6 years now, and love it. Every bit as enjoyable to ride as my previous VFR 750, and it handles surprisingly well. No braking fork-dive either, with its wonderfully whacky telelever front suspension.
I like the torquey power delivery of the big air-cooled twin, and would never want another chain driven bike. Shaft drive is just so practical, clean and sensible.

You're right. There's not much room for two on there, is there?
