Lennon or McCartney
Posted by: chuck777 on 27 January 2006
Out of curiosity I am wondering what the opinions are here on who was the better overall song writer of the Beatles. I honestly believe that it was Paul McCartney. Please do not get me wrong, I highly regard John Lennon as one of the greatest songwriters of his time, but when I listen to the Beatles I find more of Paul's songs than John's tickle my fancy. Again I am asking for overall (meaning number of songs as opposed to the best song).
Thanks,
Charles

Then why did he sing that awful song 'My Way' and he didn't attempt a single Half Man Half Biscuit cover. Sorry Erik, I guess I just don't like crooners.
Well....I have no idea why he sang that 'My way song' (maybe he could see it would be a whopping great commercial success?)I can't say it's my favourite either. What is a half man half biscuit cover? I am intrigued.

Paul McCartney has featured on more #1s than any other artist albeit under many different guises and pseudonyms: 24 in total!
"The Ballad Of John And Yoko" was recorded and mixed in one quick session by John and Paul on April 14 1969 in Studio 3 at Abbey Road; the master was Take 10.
John played acoustic guitar, two lead guitars and percussion, and sang lead vocal, Paul played drums, bass guitar, piano and maracas, and sang the backing vocal.
Just some trivia I have delved into

Senior Member ROTF, thanks for remembering "You know it don't come easy" because that & "Back off Boogaloo" I think were up there with the rest, and I always like Georges stuff the best. I'm not saying it was better, I just liked it more, but then I'm not huge on The Beatles anyway.
If Lennon had lived, I wonder if he would be producing stinkers like McCartney and we would have another opinion by now? I don't know why musicians don't retire gracefully.

He'd already started, Rasher. 'Watching the Wheels' anyone? Or even 'Bungalow Bill' for that matter.
Now, why don't the Stones pack it in, for gawds sake.

Erik - I'm not sure you'd like Half Man Half Biscuit as they are more satirical than musical in many respects - though they do know how to play. This link may help explain what they are about.
Best regards, Rotf

Rasher, I am affraid the spanner would have been thrown well and truly into the works regarding this " would lennon be recording stinkers like mccartney" because in an interview I watched featuring one of john lennons family, john was talking of coming back to liverpool to get the beatles up and running again.
Although an avid lennon fan I would give paul mc a pat on the back for giving a cracking performance in his kings dock performance, the whole evening was enjoyable, I balked initially at the admission charge but now based on what we experienced would have paid more.
We were right at the front, when he did " live and let die " and the fireworks went off what a moment

Lennon, but only because I find his first three solo albums so compelling. The Beatles' work was the result of a songwriting team, Lennon-McCartney, George Harrisons' increasingly great tunes and the elusive but potent chemistry between all four members. McCartney suffers a bit from being prolific but lax in the quality control dept. His recent concert tour was amazing though!
In the 70's, Lennon often (rightly) criticised McCartney for writing middle-class sentimental pap; I have to say that Lennon was doing the same thing on Double Fantasy. He wasn't perfect.
