Yes, America has hit a new low, and it's all on video, there'll be lawyers, cops, psychologists, etc, etc, good teachers as opposed to inadequate one's comments that one of the officers was herself black (so that's allright then) time will tell, watch this space.

N.B Yes I know it's spelt handcuffs, and I'll be interested to hear Seno'r Parry's expert opine on this one, if he's not too busy oiling his garden furniture ?

This is an amazing example of stupidity and incompetence, although there's no suggestion of racism on this occasion.
The police seem to have acted with insensitivity, stupidity and incompetence. No surprise there.
It's astonishing that the school teachers were unable to deal with a single five year old child throwing a tantrum. I suspect that the problem is that they are not allowed to touch the child by laws which do not differentiate between harmless and even friendly physical restraint on the one hand and violence and abuse on the other.
I also have little doubt that incompetent parenting has played a large part in the behaviour patterns of this child. No child acts this way without inadequate parenting.
Like most parents of young children in the UK, I watch the excellent Supernanny televison programme. Each week we are shown examples of unruly behaviour by children and each week that behaviour changes dramatically and rapidly (almost instantly) as Supernanny teaches the parents how to bring up their children.
Finally, it's almost certain that the child's diet and lifestyle also contribute to her behaviour.
As incompetence in parenting, teaching and the police combine with dreadful diet, harmful lifestyle and dumb laws in an increasingly litigious society, I expect there's much more of this sort of thing to come.

Steve M

Sorry 7 Up old Chap, but as a 'non parent' for what it's worth your comments are so far off of the mark they almost hurt. Just about every child (irrespective of their parenting and background) throws a wobbly now and again (especially in this age group) and I'll be interested to hear from any parents on here (Who recently so loudly shouted their love & protection of their children from the rooftops (quite unstandably so too) to comment themselves, innit ).

Well of course every child throws a wobbly now and again. Also, it's the job of every child to push the boundaries so that he learns how far he can go.
However, in this case it seems the child has gone beyond wobbly.

I think you have hit the nail on the head.
We had a case last week in Swindon where a bus driver was sentenced to 80 hours community service for throwing a 12 year old boy off a bus who was scaring other passengers. He grabbed the boy by the shoulder and pulled him off the bus using force because the boy refused to behave or leave.
The boys parents had received several written warnings from the school and the bus company about his unruly behaviour.
The Driver now has a criminal record.
The driver had to make a snap decision and chose to eject him.
Now the other bus drivers may refuse to pick up school children because the message has been sent out that children can get away with bad behaviour. Who wants to risk getting a criminal when dealing with yobs.
Regards
Mick

I bet you say that to all the girls you old charmer you !
Fritz Von So as well as the cops being above the law ? you'd be perfectly happy for your own 5 year old to be cuffed (if needed) as that's your opinion and wish (though not the law of the land) even though it will be proven to be quite illegal, and if accepted by 'society' taken as the norm in future by over zealous 'non parent' rozzers ? Rodney King comes to mind too, innit.

I haven't seen the video, I was basing my comments on the Sky News article that you linked to.
Of course if she didn't overstep the mark then it would be down to incompetent and over-reacting teachers and police.
And, on a separate issue ...
Mick's quite right about the bus driver incident. Bring back Dixon of Dock Green and the 'clip round the ear'.
When I teach Ki Aikido to kiddies (7-10 years) I tell them: "Your teachers aren't allowed to hit you but I am because I'm an aikido teacher." Funnily enough, coming from me, it always makes the children smile. I never have hit them of course - there are more effective forms of restraint in aikido.
I believe that teachers aren't even allowed to use touch these days. It would be a funny aikido class without it.

Of course but why were the police called in the first place?
I must buy myself some garden gnomes to play with.

Just as well she wasn't armed. A sharp pencil, hair clip or something similar. There would have been a blood bath.

The BBC report says the driver grabbed him by the throat, and pushed him off the bus so as he landed on his back.
The kid sounds like a right pain, no doubt, but I am surprised you would consider a 56 year old man grabbing a 13 year old boy by the throat as unproblematic.

Whether the little brat was grabbed by the shoulder or the throat is irrelevant, he had to be ejected by a driver who was forced into a position of having to make a snap decision.
Because of that little brat, a decent man of previous unblemished record has to do community service.
Steve made the point that you dare not touch children now a days and that is why the Police have to be called out, even to deal with a 5 year old.
Can you really blame the bus drivers for wanting to boycot school buses.

Perhaps you are right Mick but... When we were kids this did happen and I remember our school bus driver who we respected very much was known to eject children in their early teens from his bus . Of course they then hitchhiked home but we had few killers and other unsavouy characters on the loose in those days.
Also even the most menial buses today seem to have a communication system, meaning....
Getting back to the thread, the 5 year old was having an extreme temper tantrum. When this happens parents are apt after extreme provocation to give the offender an almighty wallop. The problem in doing this if you are not a parent is immense. Noone can condone hand cuffing but reading between the lines this was probably felt to be the least of all evils.
