NAP 150 versus NAP 140
Posted by: Hans 67 on 30 November 2003
Hello all,
I have a Nait 5 and I have "decided" to go for a poweramp. I can buy a new NAP 150 or find myself a second hand NAP 140. The last will be cheaper. But how will it sound?
Greetings, Hans

Hi Hans
The simple answer is 'different'.
And do bear in mind that the 140 alone, will sound very different, depending on when it was last serviced.
The 140 (if it's working at its peak) should sound fast, with excellent leading edge drive.
The 150 will sound smoother, more spacious, and a bit more laid back.
Very much a matter of personal taste.

Hello,
thanks J.N., this is exactly the kind of response I wanted.
Nobody else?

I have a 140 which I love, but not having tried a 150 I'd be reluctant to venture an opinion on which you should go for or what the differences might be.
Picking up on one of JN's points, if you buy a used 140, budget for the cost of a service, dependent on age. When I spoke with Naim a couple of weeks ago I was told this could cost up to £160.
Steve.
It's a grand old team to play for...

Hi there,
I currently have a couple of NAP140's in my system. I am using my system more and more for home cinema and love the drive and pace of the sound of the 140's. I also like the toe tapping of them on music.
I have heard 150's recently and completely agree with what has been said here already, neither amp is better than the other, they are both different from each other. If you are unsure, then I would suggest trying to listen to them somewhere and you'll understand what everyone has been saying about them.
I think if I was running a pure 2 channel system, I would tend to prefer the 150 nowadays. But then again, you can get a second hand 140 for a relatively good price too.
Cheers,
Roy.

Hello all,
I have bought a NAP 180.
I went this morning to my dealer. The idea was to listen to the difference between a Nait 5 alone and a Nait 5 with a NAP 150. I did this and did not find the upgrade worthwhile; the bass was a little stronger, just as dynamics and there was a little bit more detail. The overall sound was roughly equal; I kept my 1350 Euro.
Then I saw a stack of olive Naim gear in the corner of the listening room, I asked the salesman: these where their old demo gear. And there was a NAP 180 in there, that should cost me 1200 Euro. I asked for a demo and sold!
I am pretty new to Naim, so I had never heard the olive gear. I like it very much. When I read back this topic then I agree totally with you all regarding the sound differences (NAP 140 and 180 sound probably roughly equal). My preference is (in this price region) the olive kit.
Thank you all for the advice.
