Connecting PS3 to n-vi and Pioneer plasma

Posted by: meaculpa on 27 December 2007

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help? I have searched the forums, but have not managed to pick up an answer.

I have an n-vi which feeds video to a Pioneer plasma via the DVI/HDMI route. A Sky+ HD box is also connected to the plasma via HDMI with the audio out from the sky box going via sn optical connection. I also have a Wii connected to the plasma by component video and audio, with sound connected to the n-vi via the anolouge 1 input (RCA to DIN).

I now want to connect a PS3, and the logical route is to use HDMI for the video and optical for the sound, however I only have one input on the n-vi which is being used by the sky+ HD box. The PS3 does have an option of a componet out, but this looks like a Sony "special" connector at one end, and I am not sure I can just use the two RCA plugs at the other end for sound only without using the video as well (with the Wii connected I have no spare component inputs on the Plasma only Scart/composite). I suppose the only other option is to use a lower quality audio connection for the Sky+ HD audio and use the optical for the PS3.

Can anybody else please share how they have PS3's connected

Many thanks

Andrew

The best way to connect the PS3 to a display device such as LCD or plasma (flat-screen TV) is via a short HDMI cable (around 1.5 m). This allows the upscaling up to 1080p (the most common settings are: 720p, 1080i and 1080p). You can buy a HDMI switchbox if your TV has only one HDIM input. Make sure you update your PS3 to the firmware 2.10 which allows playing divx format files (movies). PS3 upscaling technique is excellent.

Hi Andrew

The n-Vi can't take advantage of the PS3's HDMI input for surround sound. So in your circumstances you can only use the PS3's optical output. As you have Sky Hd your choices are to connect via an optical switch or via an optical to coaxial switch box and then connect to the n-Vi via coaxial digital

I have used both ( to connect to AV2 not n-Vi) and both ways are acceptable. I am lazy, and if you don't want manually switch then I would use the optical to coaxial switch. Personally I used the optical directly from the PS3, as I don't really rate the Sky HD 5.1 output, and thought the optical to coaxial switch didn't degrade the Sky HD output too much.

Richard,

Many thanks for your reply. Firstly
it is good to know that I had not missed something obvious, and secondly the optical to digital coaxial route also looks like my prefered option as well.

Many thanks again and kind regards,

Andrew
