What do new forum users think?

Posted by: Tony Lockhart on 02 March 2005

I've been observing and occasionally contributing to the Naim fora since I returned from Saudi at the end of '99. Over the years I've become used to the different characters, and have learned which make me laugh, wince or spend.
However, I can't imagine what a newcomer would make of Fritz, Mick et al, especially when the insults start flying. Sometimes I have difficulty telling whether all is well humoured.
Any recent users care to comment?

I'm not sure if I'm a recent user, a "senior member" as appended to my username, or just a try-hard. Or all three. Or none.

When I joined there were sharp words spoken on a lot of threads (but my general impression is that the place has become more civilised) and at first I found the thread wars a little intimidating. However, I did notice that membership was given merely for the asking so I entered the fray feeling that my status as a member was independent of my confidence.

The less civil of the members are more than made up for by the great numbers of polite, and dare I say it, compassionate members.

Fritz is a little like a Court Jester.

As far as internet forums go this has to be the best I have come across. The 'banter' is pretty robust but never dull. A forum with PRAT, what more could you ask Smile

Cheers

Agreed.

Pitch(ed battles)
Rhythm (regular postings)
and
Timing (time zones and all)

Especially enjoyed the banter and exchange of viewpoints during our US election process.
I regularly haunt but don't always chime in as many issues deal with life in the UK. It is quite a slice of life though!

For some reason, when I think of Mick, I picture that cantankerous old hobbit in LOTR that lived next to Frodo.

Too good-natured a debate tends toward tedium; a few insults add necessary spice!

I'd probably post less often or not have joined in the first place were it not for the flavour of the "debate".

Ah, I love the smell of opprobrium in the morning! Winker

It takes time to get into the way of things. When I first joined, every post was polite and helpful and I thought I had better mind my manners. Then there came the recent series of (healthy or vitriolic depending on how you interpret them) debates which I was initially not sure about.

WIth the benefit of time spent here and therefore more experience of forum ettiquette and culture, such debates are recognised for what they are. In any event, like the TV, if you don't like the content of the channel, you can choose another.

Some characters are fun, others surreal in the fullest sense of the word - but something about this place just drags you back to read some more - and bung your own two pennarth in. What is sure, there is certainly a huge range of what is considered humour, and one person's jocular comment is someone else's insult - and sometimes people can take "third party" offence to some posts whereas other look upon them as hilarious. Such is life.

Brad

PS - Just noticed that other 2004 vintage members have far more posts than me - am I not saying ehough or have others too much time on their hands?

There do seem to be a singular lack of trolls here. They come with the territory on many fora and newsgroups. The usual flavour is "black is white" argued by someone who well knows that "white is really black". The ensuing debacle is often worth the entrance fee for the things one learns fom the knowledgable pedants. Who insist on playing a straight bat with someone who has never even heard of cricket. (and long after the troll's true colours are clearly seen for what they are) Cool

After posting in other forums I can only say that this one has a certain rhythm about it.
I can understand how some members must be missed when they for there own reasons stop posting. Like a small death in the family perhaps. I suggest that they sound the final post to all in sundry. Then we can have a poll.
When they can see how beloved they really are they obviously will break down and joyfully return to the fold.

Being a new member I should probably reply;

Simple really, if I didn't like it I wouldn't be here. Shame only that most of the postings seem to be on hifi. I wished the music room was a bit livelier, but nothing is stopping me of course...

On individual members; Fritz whenever you're in London, pint is on me.

I also like to congratulate Adam with his moderating; I know it has been criticised by some, but this is now a civilised place, look what happened to ‘the other one’.

Rgds,
Peter

How many pints did you say ?
Posted on: 03 March 2005 by Aiken Drum
CPeter,

You could liven up the music room by posting about Clapton or Queen Smile

I was told by another member that such artists are...... Well - try a post and see.

Having met the man I can only say that your image is worryingly spot-on, but with more humour.

Also as a newbie member this forum is like Naim Audio, better than the rest and rewarding.
