Cycling on the Crown Estate

Posted by: Jonathan Gorse on 07 May 2005

Having lived near Virginia Water and Windsor Great Park for the past 10 years I have cycled most of the trails within reach but unbelievably I never explored Windsor Great Park until today by bike.

It is absolutely fantastic - miles of beautiful countryside and tarmaced trails within the park and barely a car in sight. I can't believe it took me 10 years to get round to going there.

We towed Rhiannon in her new Chariot Cougar 2 kiddie trailer and enjoyed a fantastic afternoon pootling around on the bikes and enjoying tea and flapjacks.

I enjoyed it so much it almost made the Monarchy seem worthwhile!

Anybody else ridden there?

There are signs prohibiting cycling on the Long Mile and elsewhere.

The Wife and I cycled to Windosr last weekend. Stopped at the Crispin for a drink and a bag of crisps.

David,

We had a map from Surrey county council which didn't indicate which trails were for bikes or walkers so we took off from the Car Park at Virginia Water, and started cycling up a gravel trail. Before long a Groundsman pulled us over and said we were on a footpath but anywhere with tarmac was fine for cycling whereas the red dusty trail stuff is for walkers. I was worried that there wouldn't be many tarmac areas, but in fact there were absolutely loads. I gather the long mile is the only tarmaced bit you can't ride on. We went up past the Guard Polo Club and then meandered around all over, bobbed into some Lodge or other to use one of the Queens conveniences for a quick pitstop and then found a quaint shop doing teas in their garden.

I'd never bothered with it before because I didn't realise how extensive the cycling was. It would be well worth exploring next time you're near Windsor.
