10mm dedicated spurs

Posted by: Darren B on 04 September 2006

As an electrician of 16 years the idea of using a 10mm feed for a spur for a hifi seems a bit like using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut most electric ovens don't require this sort of feed why does a naim system require this?
Surely a 2.5 or even 4mm would suffice as this what normal ring mains are wired in.
Please note I live in the UK.

Tony Blair is the best placed person to run the country, and Gordon Brown is the most qualified in rank to run the country economically. Just accept it. Abolish voting as it's a waste of time.
End of discussion.

There is a distinct difference between harmless discussion and the giving of bad advice.

Some of the advice given in this thread was bad and could mess up someones system.

Is that what you really want ?

ASs it happens Mick I'm considering a 6mm single spur as recommended by the chaps who rewired my mains block. The resulting improvement in sound quality leads me to trust their judgement...

Steve,

Stick with a single spur using Pirelli 6mm cable going to a double switchless Crabtree socket. This is then daisy-chained (from left socket to right) to further double sockets, using the same cable.

10mm cable will not allow you to daisy-chain the sockets and any other form of distribution results in detrimental sound.

Multiple spurs ruin the earthing arrangement and so ruin the sound. Naim equipment was not designed using multiple spurs.

Use a Wylex 404 4-way Standard Insulated Consumer Unit with a 30a rewireable cartridge fuse. Make sure the wire is screwed down tightly. The 404 is rated at 60amps and has a heavier duty switch. MCB's ruin the sound.

If you want to take it up a notch, change your plug fuses for "audiophile grade" ones such as Isoclean. These are extremely high quality, have silver plated contacts and are directional.

This is still subjective - as there are only a few who have tried some of the actual options here and can validly comment - but what do i know - I've only tried ring v 1 x 1mm2 and hydra v 4 10mm2... Roll Eyes
