Dark Side Of The Moon SACD Version

Posted by: cunningplan on 01 April 2003

Has anybody bought this yet and do you think even on a CD5 we're going to hear anything different or perhaps a better recording. I was just wondering before parting with my cash!!

Hmmmm... Bought it on CD and vinyl. So far I'm not very impressed.

The packaging is great (as usual) but the sound is just not DSOTM.

Although I haven't heard the surround sound encoding (being strictly a two channel man...), I think the recording sounds a bit muted. Not as open and clear as my favourite Dark Side reference (original vinyl pressing) - Generally, it sounds a bit compressed and, well, muddy...

But then I'm a fanatic, so what do I know?!

...Just think how happy you'd be with a mint original UK pressing then...

Would someone guide me to where its being sold on vinyl.

Virgin has stooped to the final level of utter shit in Watford by removing the small vinyl section and replacing it with even more 'buy 2 cds for 20 quid'

The utter twats.

Tom.

Virgin is the 'independent' in Watford.

Its now official no one else does new vinyl in watford, except one shop a long way from me and undrivable too.

I don't want to give them my money anymore!

I'll find it on the web.

I really wanted it for tomorrow as the fiance is away and I have a house all to myself to 'wind it up'

I found it on vinyl.

As far as I can make out the vinyl one has not been touched in terms of changing to music, sounds just like my old pressing.

Better condition though Wink

Muchachos

Got my copy friday, I gather that EMI have already sold out of the first pressing.

Unable to listen to the wonderful, heavy, virgin vinyl until tonight - same as many of us I have had this album since the mid 70s; three copies on vinyl and two on CD before; apart from being lovely and quiet, I found myself thinking "aaah, this is what they meant it to sound like." A must have IMO, I am even more delighted because I have been searching for about 10 years for remastered / audiosnob / japanese special etc etc pressing. Finally got it.

It also comes with the original poster and stickers, plus a new poster.

Far out, maaan. Like, wow.

Regards

Mike

It's a funny old universe .. we had some friends over on Saturday night and the evening ended up with us all pissed (what else) taking turns to play our favorite tracks. Funny how the guests always gravitate to the oldest nastiest sounding recordings - old stones etc. The system was doing a pretty solid job of making music and then someone put on my old CD of DSOTM, "us and them" which was fine until it got to the "forward he cried from the rear" bit which sounded like a skipload of cats on fire. Maybe I was asking too much from my still new speakers but it would be interesting to hear how this sounds on the new version.

Dozy. OK, here goes (This might be a bit hazy 'cos I'm at work and don't have my copy to hand)

An original UK pressing of DSOTM has the words, 'The Gramophone Co. Ltd' written around the label, starting at the 10 o'clock position. It also has the same words written horizontally to the left of the label (but, then re-issues do as well...). It also has the words 'Made in Gt. Britain at the bottom of the label.

There are sleeve / insert variations as well, but that's just too dull (for now...)

Oh, and some very early pressings were misprinted with a solid blue triangle on the label, rather than the usual outline triangle (I've never actually seen one of these 'in the flesh'...)

Hope this helps...

If anyone's interested, there is a documentary on DSOTM on Saturday night, BBC 2.

The June issue of Uncut magazine (out today)is a PF DSOTM special.

You lucky vinylheads. The new cd (as CD -dunno what it sounds like in sacd)is disappointing sound wise. Muddy overall and soft in the bass, only slightly better than the bog standard cd. Not 'bad' as such but as I say, disappointing.

Now I might be out of step here but a few years back I got DSOTM and Wish You Were Here on vinyl(free when I rescued them from a bin!!) and IMHO the latter wipes the floor with t'moon. Is this just a generational thing...can I start a new debate, the DSOTM vs.WYWH wars...Nick Mason takes on Gloria Hunniford perhaps?

as for CD Ummagumma wipes the floor with my copies of DSOTM & WYWH, and I prefer the music to both of them too (unreconstructed hippy)

Today I got my copy of 'Dub Side of the Moon' by the Easy All-Stars. As the name implies it is a reggae-dub version of the album, albeit one that is as faithful as the dub revision allows. Right now I am listening to it echoing around the house being played on a $300 JVC player housed in the 30-foot-high ceilinged great room. It sounds great, both musically and acoustically. Later on tonight it gets the honor of the DBLs. But for now highly recomended! JAH.

The best-ever ersion of DSOTM is DARK SIDE OF THE AUTOBAHN, a recently-released 7" bootleg pic disc that combines Kraftwerk and the Floyd.

Tres Bon, if you can find it.

I expect Mr Slater has it.
