...have also been a fan and admirer of his mixes and DJ sets. The old DJ sets (late 1980s/ 90s) are not as far as I am aware commercially available. Would anybody happen to know a 'bootleg' source?

TheMixingBay currently showing 5 MP3 sets from between 91-93, registration is required
It is the place for techno and DJ sets, but does not allow commercially available material, which is a more difficult call than many of the other bootleg sites with such rules. Most bootleg sites do not allow mixes, DJ sets, etc, TheMixingBay being geared to techno is the exception.
Not sure how well asking for, or replying to such requests is regarded around here though.
Pity, as many artists are very pro bootlegs, many allowing desk feeds or setting aside taping areas at concerts.
Some artists are quite hands on with their bootleg groups, some correspond occasionally with members.
Good luck.
