Based on his incredible live performance on Austin City Limits, this is all but guaranteed to be fantastic.
Can't wait to see it!
All best,

I hate him.
He's only 30, plays with more feel than a Wilton carpet, writes songs that puts the big boys to shame...it just isn't fair. If I ever meet him, I'm going to give him a slap.
I play City Love and it just sounds like the New York skyline. He's much too good. I can't stop playing his albums, they just ooze atmosphere. Bastard. I love him. I hate him.

Excellent article in new Rolling Stone, also check out the first CrossRoads DVD. He holds his own with some top players.

Yep I would be asking the same question as munch.
Have heard a few good tracks by him but also a lot of stuff I don't rate too highly.

This is where I would start, I find his other albums too pop.
This album is live and a great band.

I would start with Room For Squares and Continuum.
Although there are a couple of superb sounding shorter EP type CDs.
My personal favourite, so far, is "The Village Sessions" - some tracks from Continuum played acoustically in great sound. I think that version of "Slow Dancing" is unbeatable.

Thanks for that as it was the poppy sound I just don't seem to like so much.

With all due respect, I never really understand what folks mean when they say that something is "too pop." I mean, it's personal taste, of course, and that's yours, but for me music is either good or bad, no matter the flavor. But maybe that's just me.
Anyway, TRY! has some fantastic moments, although I find myself wanting more textural depth on the songs that aren't flat out jams.
However, I consider Continuum to be one of the best all-around albums, of any kind of music, I've ever heard, nearly perfect in its substance, variety, and depth of writing, singing, playing, and production. And the one trio cut, a cover of Jimi Hendrix' Bold As Love, is as burning hot as anything on TRY!.
But here's a great suggestion for the uninitiated: just go for the new live CD (or DVD) Where the Light Is. That way you'll get the full spectrum of Mayer's world: solo acoustic (his solo performance of Stop This Train on the Austin City Limits broadcast was astoundingly good ... incredible vocal improvisation), a power trio set à la TRY!, and a full band set with all the depth of texture of his studio albums.
Can't go wrong with that!
All best,
Fred

What can I say?
One word. Blinding. If you are already a fan, don't hesitate. If you have ever wondered about JM or what the fuss is about, try it. If you don't like it you can safely say he's not for you.

I've got the CD and DVD on order from the US. The live trio album is really excellent. It's the only album of his I have so far.
As I mentioned in another thread he was superb live last week in Hyde Park. An exceptionally talented musician.

Buy all of JM's stuff, it is all at least very good.
He also allows live amateur recordings - this is a link to some, if you do bit torrent, seeds are few as these shows are mainly a couple years old so download times may be extended, scroll down for several of the Trio shows in '05.

Keep at it. You could do worse that this one. A bit of verbal bollox in "Bold as Love" - otherwise superb.

Is it me or is Mayer the most popular artist on 'What are you listening to...' at the moment?
