Quadraspire
Posted by: Duncan Fullerton on 25 July 2001
Have you guys any experience of Quadraspire stuff? Much though I'd like to Fraim/Hutter/Mana my kit, dosh is an issue, so I'm thinking of lobbing a few bob at my local retailer of this stuff.
Not being very bright, I was thinking of 7 shelf unit with 100mm gaps. I'm hoping someone out there has simliar kit on similar racks and can advise on alternative formations. I.e. two tables/different gaps. For space reasons two is the max I could cope with, but I'm open to suggestions as to shelf gaps and distribution of kit. Or indeed any other input.
Thanks muchly ...
Seeing as you are in London, why not go to Grahams, in Islington - I have just got a whole new rig, including Quadraspire Reference stand, which they claim is pretty close to the Fraim in certain ways...
Also, they did offer to lend me a second-hand stand if mine wasn't ready by delivery day, so may have it for sale, if budjet is really tight !
As to gaps etc, mine has 6" which I believe gives air cooling space, but talk to them - I found them very helpful !
Good luck,
Steve

It has been suggested that it may even be BETTER than Mana in some areas, and not just price!
interesting. who is suggesting this? for electronics or for lp12 or both???
now my turn: it has been suggested that the reference is definitely better than isoblue and gives the hutter a run for its money.
if you get a chance, it will be interesting if you can dem it against one or two other racks, say isoblue and/or hutter, and let us know what you think. its certainly getting hot in this area....
mischief time: i wonder how a phase 4 QS reference sounds?? ....
is there life beyond hifi racks?

I know that the reference was made to BOTH LP12 AND electronics. I know that Quadraspire have experimented with different types of wood - and lacquer coatings - versus glass. I think it's down to their use of non-glass, as well as the decoupling of each shelf, especially the top shelf, which is further decoupled for either the CD player or the turntable, although I'm going to experiment with the preamp on the top shelf also. I've found that this is more critical to overall performance against, say placing the CD player at this optimal position in my current modest supports.
I currently use glass, which I know adds a certain "ringing" to the sound.
I've found ringing to be quite detrimental to the natural ebb and flow of music, i.e: subtle manifestations of PR&T, when I heard JM Lab 905s on CD (metal) stands versus Naos floorstanders in a CDS2/52/250 system - for you die_hard Flat Earthers, I did the above A/B tests OUTSIDE of the listening room, with the door open, where I had no spatial distractions!
I later discovered that the 905s work brilliantly atop JM Lab's WOODEN stands!

One day I'll get to do an A/B dem between Mana and new QS Reference, and then I won't need to (un)quote anybody!
Steven Toy,
as opposed to
Stephen Toy,
or Stephen T

James, have you heard fraim in comparison to mana or is this just your previous preferences?
I only say this as it already appears that one or two people have ditched mana in favour of frame.
as opposed to
Stephen Toy,
or Stephen T
its hopeless, isnt it... one day, i'll get it right.
i'd love to quote you on your mana/QS dem.
its likely that i will rationalise on QS reference (2 5-tier racks) to replace the mistire of isoblue and projekt that i have. i think the LP12 will end up on a mana sound table or reference, plus power supply table for the geddon.

You say the new quadraspire 'trounces the fraim big time'. Where did you get this dem?
yes, more info would be good. What dealer, what kit ( cd, lp?), how much kit on each rack, how many levels????. I only say this as the two dealers I have spoken to who stock both products already have a preferance for the fraim. Also one dealer told me that the fraim requires approx half an hour to optimise after loading kit. You seem to have a strong opinion yet have failed to add any meat to your view.
cheers
Nigel
Trouble is he couldn't give me a price off the top of his head - obvoiusly got his finger on the pulse. Can you remember what they were? A wooden Q4 is about £280 with £70 per add-on shelf. How does this pitch against the wobbly one?
You are having a laugh right?
P.
You said the Quadraspire wiped the floor with the Fraim and we here who like, and believe in our Naim, would really like to know why.
Be objective now
P.
I am sure that in about 6 months time, most of you will have had the opportunity of seeing and hearing the Fraim. Also Mana will soon be sold via retail outlets so you will be able to do a direct comparison. Hopefully this will end the constant arguments of which one is better, especially when most of you have not yet heard the two in comparison.
The Fraim wins hands down on WAF and style and believe me you are in for a pleasant surprise on the sound.
Hold back until you have heard both and then make your choice between the ironmongery and wooden craftsmanship........your choice chaps.
Regards
Mick
I'll be as irritating as he, by not saying which dealer - so you'll all have to work it out for yourselves!
