Double gatefold deluxe 400g grand cru editions

I'm putting on my fire-proof undergarments expecting to be flamed but........
I like CD's, they don't have "a bowl of rice krispies with milk added" sound effects going on in the background. I can use my remote control to skip tracks or replay ones. I can get a phenomenal selection of music worldwide that just was not available in vinyl only days.
Maybe it's me and my inherent modesty but I don't feel the need to proclaim everytime I post in the "what are you listening to thread" -
"in stereo stored using 16-bit PCM coding at a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz"
maybe I should, perhaps it would add to whole appreciation and discovering new music kind of vibe I get from that thread.

I guess I'm one of those who sometimes mentions 'spinning the black stuff' on that other thread... and I'm doing it right now ( Sade, Diamond Life
)
Thinking about why we do it, perhaps it is because digging around in our old vinyl collections....

Sorry had to get up and switch her onto her other side... where was I, yes..
Digging in our vinyl collections takes us back to younger, more carefree times and these funny bits of black plastic are dear to us. I couldn't be sure but perhaps my original copy of DSOTM is the oldest thing of mine I still have - 95% of my vinyl predates 50% of my life so these really are old chums which we get pleasure from using quite apart from the music.
Sentimental - undoubtedly, but who cares.
Now what's up next.....

So instead of extra "rice crispies " you listen with some of the music missing?
Quite often vinyl versions are different to their silver siblings and often sound different (better?) that is why people state that it is being listened to from a different source to the "normal" or more popular CD.

Not always, but more often than not, I find vinyl versions preferable. They aren't always available on vinyl but when they are, it's a courtessy to other readers to let them know a record is available. No big deal really.

sloop,
perhaps you should invest in an LP12,then maybe you would understand better.

For someone who's invested the amount of money you have in hifi up to now, one would have thought that you would know that with a decent deck (not P3), cartridge and power supply, vinyl is virtually silent.

Quite right BigH.

my grievance is with an elitism / snobbery that is much more prevalent in the music room now than when I joined a few years back.
There are so many threads like:
quote:Is that on vinyl?
quote:no unfortunately it's just a cd
I'm not arguing that one sound is better than the other, just pointing out that some posts in the "what are you listening to" thread reek of a certain level of condescension towards non-vinyl albums.
Of course maybe I'm just a sad old bas-tard jealous of LP 12's

i have vastly more cds than vinyl and enjoy every one of them as much as i do my vinyl collection.....didnt realise there was a vendetta knocking digital media ? i and many others happen to enjoy BOTH mediums !to be honest i dont really understand your gripe - nobodys putting cds down here and this is a forum on hi-fi and music afterall.

Don't we all have CDs that sound great, vinyl that sounds crap and vice versa. Most people do yet you still hear this crap about CDs having music missing etc etc.
Dare I say it I've even got mp3s at relatively low bitrates which sound stunning (
) whilst others are unlistenable.

What people get upset about I think is when one side or the other make anti-claims for the other media in isolation.
Hence the Noisy LP snipe usually has the missing info retort.
It just goes to show that they are both flawed to a greater or lesser degree.
Until some one comes up with an infinite sampling rate system (impossible?) then one system of play back will have its knockers (36D are good
), whether vinyl,CD,minidisc,H/D,tape,DAT etc.

Sloop I am disappointed. I thought from the title you had found some even more inordinately expensive vinyl for us to drool over
Count d is right, no rice krispy problems with good Vinyl setups (BTW I have heard intentional rice krispies introduced on CD tracks!!). I agree with quite a lot of points made in support of declaring format in play. If you fancy making it clear you are listening to a CD go for it. BigH and others are right that it is music that matters.
Whatever.....I appreciate the links to unheard music that I might otherwise never listen to regardless of format.
