Rolling Stone top 500 al***s

Yet another list but at least this one looks as though there were folk older than 15 making the choices.
As I've got rather a lot of the albums mentioned I've got to say that they showed impeccable taste.

Always find lists a bit 'misleading' as surely not everyone has heard everything have they? - mind you there's some good stuff in there, sadly no Magazine though....

It seemed like quite a good list but there were loads of ommissions - no Ellington, Mingus, Parker etc. Some artists had more than one greates hits package listed which seemed odd. Alanis Morissette even made the cut! By the way I had about a 100 of them.

No magazine, but Suicide just managed to make the list. I'm suprised at the number of compilations and anthologies in there. Do they count as 'real' albums?
Posted on: 20 November 2003 by BigH47
A good list. Obviously should have left the Smiths and Oasis out.
Only 1 Tull and No Rush, hay ho.

I like this type of thing. Of Course they are not going to match your choice (as Abbey Road, and Forever Changes should be 1 and 2 ) and there will be omissions or highly placed albums you think are dreadfull.
But they are useful items for advice on album buying, (Which dylan/Stones/Bowie/Mitchell album should I get first) etc etc.
I totally agree that compliations/anthologies should not normally be admitted, though you can make a case that some are the only sensible way into a particuloar artist.

Why does Clash - London Calling allways turn up in these kind of things? Compared to the company it's in here, honestly, it's totally unimaginative. Not a bad record as such, but not top ten material.

Hmmm - afraid I can never understand why Pet Sounds is always up there?
Posted on: 21 November 2003 by JeremyD
I have only seven of the listed albums, only one of which is in the top two hundred and fifty! I must admit, though, that there are several in the top 100 that really ought to be in my collection.
Since I have about 350 non-classical albums the Obscurity Factor* of my non-classical record collection is 350/7 = 50. I wonder which forum members have the highest and lowest O.F.? I imagine that Matthew Robinson (who rarely mentions anything I have heard of) will easily be in the running for the highest...
* O.F. = number of albums / number in the top 500.

Because it's a work of exquisite beauty and genius which changed forever the way pop music was recorded.

The sad bastard in me has come up with the figure of 137. There are thirty albums not owned on the list screaming at me to go buy them. It never ends ..............(not that I would want it to).

Your loss.
Seriously, it's worth persevering. No it wasn't what many people were expecting at the time i.e. another load of instantly catchy surfing teen songs, which is why it wasn't fully appreciated in the USA when it was first released. It's not an easy album to get into but once you do it's stunning. Melodies and harmonies way ahead of what the Beatles were doing.

Hmm interesting that 4 out of the top 10 are Beatles albums and mid period too, well the white album is beginning of late period by my account. My favorite group too! If I count the ones I no longer have I rate up there in the 50% for the top 50. this is a good list for my presents for my neices, just to get them away from Britney.
This was a list compiled by an aging group that had been thru the good years in R&R.

I have got Pet Sounds but played it a couple of times and obviously didn't get it. Will give it a spin again sometime soon on account of your enthusiasm - never too late to reassess!
cheers

180, I'm truly ashamed to admit. I've bought an awful lot of crap over the years, but never seem to be able to get rid of even the worst stuff I've wasted my money on.
At least I don't have bloody Exile On Main Street (although I do have the rest of the Top 10). Why does anyone think the Rolling Stones are any good?

I've got 116 of them, and 6 of the top ten, mostly on vinyl. I was absolutely amazed, and delighted, too see all 3 Nick Drake albums in there. Also the Zombies Oddessy & Oracle as they are badly underappreciated in Britain.

My tally- 77
I might have missed them but I did not spot any Stereolab or Blur. That surprises me. They should knock Def Leppard off to make room.

Those polled were clearly influenced by 14-year-old mall rats (and their 29-year-old moms) from Flint, Michigan when they chose these:
Def Leppard - "Hysteria"
Def Leppard - "Pyromania"
Metallica - "Metallica"
Metallics - "Master of Puppets"
Jay-Z - 2 albums whose names I forgot
Eminem - see above
Rage Against The Machine - see above

I know I am a little young for this, but surely times have moved on a little bit, most of the top ten is dylan and beatles.
Whats the deal with Dylan anyway, I just find him depressing and annoying. Mabye I need to re-appraise his work?

The deal with Dylan....
Try listening to:
1.)Bringing it all Back Home (Ballad of a Thin Man, Desolation Row)
2.)Blonde on Blonde (Memphis Blues Again, Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands)
3.)Blood on the Tracks (listen to any 3 tracks)
4.)Desire (Hurricane, Oh Sister, One More Cup of Coffee)
5.)Time Out of Mind (Tryin to get to Heaven, Not Dark Yet)
If you check this out and can't still find the deal with Dylan then.......fair enough.

Hope you enjoy it. If not, c'est la vie. It'd be a boring world if we all liked the same stuff.
