Help needed from a PC techie please

Posted by: JamieWednesday on 17 January 2006

I bought my wife a rather splendid little MP3 player from Sony for her birthday.

Trouble is, I'm trying to load Sony's 'Connect' software onto PC but can't because the text disappears below bottom of the window and thereby I can't 'Accept' the agreement.

See the screenshot

Works OK on my lad's PC though so it's not the disc necessarily. Emailed Sony but no reply yet. Any ideas? As so far it's a bit of a crappy present!!!

Jamie,

Not the correct solution I know, but can't you transfer the file from your sons pc to your wifes?

You should be able to transfer and click the install.exe file to start the installation.

Jamie I am not for one minute questioning you PC abilities but have you simply tried scrolling the agreement text with your mouse (on the right of the text)

Many agreements like this require you to scroll to the bottom of the text before the continue button highlights.

Your screenshot looks fine to me if you do the above.

Oh no hang on I see you are already at the bottom!

Ha ha sorry I don't know how to help then. is it not possible to increase the size of the box, don't PCs allow you to resize from any edge, perhaps that will bring it into view.

My only other guess is you have a system wide setting for larger text which is effecting this particular window, mabye reduce the size of the text?

change your system font size to "normal" - looks like you have it set to large and that confuses lots of programs.

right click on the desktop, select properties then the appearance tab. Font size is on the bottom left.

It depends on the way the window has been coded. Setting the system font size or trying a different screen resolution should do the trick.

Given it's from Sony it's probably only going to load piles of spyware anway...

nah, it's just complete shit. The players are fantastic but I can't say I've ever had the pleasure of using any software as badly written as connect.

Thanks guys. All fonts/resolutions etc. are normal/regular.

When you tried it on the other pc What were your accept options Yes/No Accept Decline?

Were they underlined Y or N A or D, if so perhaps you could use the keybaord shortcut even though you can't hit it with the mouse.

Jamie,

You will have saved the file to your sons pc to a particular location (most probably "Programs"), you can find the file by using Explore or Search by right clicking your start button, either copy onto cd or usb stick and then transfer the files to your wifes pc. When you explore the folder you'll most likely see a install.exe file (be carefull to click the right one) - this will install the program to your wifes pc - hopefully without your current problem . Not strictly the right way to do it, but has worked for me in the past.

try using the keyboard to check the box. The tab key should cycle between controls and space will check the box. So press <Tab> <space> <tab> <space> etc until you can click next.

Would temporarily changing your screen resolution help? (Assuming you are running XP: Right click on desktop/select Properties/Settings/screen resolution). This may allow you to scroll down to accept the agreement and then change your resolution back to what it was.

Sony kindly emailed me a solution. Apparently it's a known problem (you think maybe they'd fix it at source).

Tab Tab Tab Tab left arrow key - brings up 'next'

In the meantime I'd downloaded a version of Sonic Stage Connect from their website.

I loaded 'Connect' from the CD and have now removed it. It must have been waaaay power/memory hungry 'cos the whole PC slowed down once it was loaded (even when I'd removed it from startup). Plus when it was actually running it was so very slow to get going with the Connect logo and 'power strip' beaming away for about 2 minutes before it loaded.

However the downloaded (slightly different) version is fine, a little clumsy but does the basics quite well and intuitively. Sounds OK thro' PC too but is only needed for transferring to the Sony HDD player which, by the way, is a little peach. Still prefer my own I-River H320 though.

Are the sonys not drag and drop?

If so you could use iTunes. In the itunes prefs have it to organise music in the itunes folder.

Navigating to this folder from the desktop will reveal each artist or band in its folder and with each folder each album. Its very tidy and easy, provided the sony does drag and drop, you could use itunes then to do desktop music.

Just a thought.

There was an article in the Times today saying that there was a problem with the software for the latest Sony mp3 players and that lots of people are returning them because they are having problems uploading music. Sorry I have not got all the details, I was reading it at the barbers, and I am off to a party. Try Googling.
