Mac OSX 10.7 Lion roars in to view
Posted by: Guido Fawkes on 20 October 2010
OSX 10.7 Lion will have Touch Screen support, 3D user interfaces, further improvements in performance and greatly improved integration with the cloud. Lion will use large web architecture and take advantage Apple's new $1bn datacentre.
Apple will release a new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. The MBA will have smaller form factor with 11.6-inch display and no more out dated technologies like hard-disk or solid state drives; this is the age of the new stick RAM.

No new Macbook Pro. Bit of a shame.
Derek, just bought an additional hard drive and trying it with Time Machine.

Does that mean you can increase the capacity of the Time Machine then count.d?

Count - excellent - only 3 more spindles needed to catch up with me <g>
I hope you bought the biggest capacity drive you could

MBA looks great - just put all your music on SD cards add hiFace and nDAC and that's it - would work even better with Chord's new BT digital amp, but I didn't say that.

Hi Tony, hope you're keeping well. At the moment I've only just added one extra 1tb internal drive and allocated it solely for use with Time Machine. It seems very good, except I wish it wouldn't backup every hour. I've ordered an external 1tb drive (Seagate 5 year warranty thingy) to further backup images only via drag and drop.
Derek, the only way I could beat you on backups is if I clone myself in case of breakdown!

count, is that one of the Seagate Freeagant range?

Yes BigH. You're now going to tell me they self destruct in 15 mins.
Posted on: 21 October 2010 by BigH47
Not if they have a 5 year warranty?
I'm sure some doomsayer will be along soon to say so.
I think Seagate are OK I have a 500Gb one already on the PC.
I thought you knew all about this stuff?
I was going to get another Segate to get iTunes off the iMac if that will work.

I have a Seagate 2TB internal hard disc of my PowerMac which servers music - seems pretty good to me.
Lion won't run on a PowerMac though

Hi Count, and how's yourself? Me, I'm fine apart from the creeping senility which manifested by me reading "Time Machine" as "Time Capsule"...

Love my iMac, not sure I'll jump into Lion till it's tamed. I'm sure there are lots of improvement. Wish 20 years ago I'd bought stock at $5. Apple is now the second largest US corporation behind Exxon, MS is 3rd and it's not even close.

Count there are apps that will allow you to specify
backup frequency, just type timemachine into www.macupdate.com

I'm fine thanks Tony, except for some strange flu bug which is currently affecting my hearing!
Thanks for the link Gary, but I'm very wary of installing any app/programme that's not officially Apple. I've always been the same and I'll doubt I'll ever change.

Backup methods, drives and programmes are constantly changing. I do my best!

I am still getting used to my Imac - it's sat right next to my windows PC, only awaiting Office 2011 to be added, transfer all my existing data to it, then it will start working for a living.
I have purchased a Western Digital 'My book Studio edition, 2TB' and have configured this to Raid 1, and set it as the main time machine backup, which it comes pre-configured for. It's all but silent 95% of the time, drives are easy to change, and automatically re-build themselves if (when) they fail. All seems to be working fine for now with me. Apparently it's not a great idea to use this drive fr both time machine and spare capacity on drive, but other drives are now so cheap thay are easy to add on.
I'm going to have a peek at those links now.

Steve, I bought Office 2008 from John Lewis for £59 with a free upgrade to 2011 Office. The Office 2011 is now available for download.

Count,
I very nearly did that I must admit, but I'm rather set in my ways and prefer the hard copy (disc in this case) as I have in the past manged to completely mess up downloads and lose them. It's only a couple of weeks away now - then this flippin thing can go.
Now my only gripe is Skype for Mac, like where the flippin'eck is it - only been waiting since March for the promissed one that will work correctly. I personally thing Mr Gates bought a majoirty share in Skype and is forcing them to hold back on developing the Mac version to the standard of the PC version ;-(

Skype for Mac works fine, I use it every day. What is wrong with it, btw?
Posted on: 27 October 2010 by Steve2701
Video fails very quickly - voice calls not so bad. Usually get to stay on video for a minute or so then it goes down.
The PC version now even allows video conferencing, but is exceedingly weird in the way it works at present. GUI is totally different to anything thay have done before.
Skype users have been asking for this update for months now :-

I see some sort of update finally came around on the 14th - I will have to check that out.

Strange! I have no problem at all, Skype is very snappy, video and audio are as clear as crystal on my MB pro. Perhaps, your (wireless) network is slow?
Posted on: 27 October 2010 by BigH47
Not a huge user of Skype and it's not always on (sorry Marc), but when I do use it is seems to work fine on iMac. I don't inflict video on people so can't comment on that.
Posted on: 27 October 2010 by Derek Wright
I have been using Skype from the MacBook while traveling around during the last month connecting via various WiFi networks in hotels - with slow connections I drop the video to keep the audio going. _ With some people I know their broadband connection is slow and so the video is no help.
In the main Skype on the Mac is pretty good - if connection is really bad I resort to having a typed conversation.
