New Naim Set Up
Posted by: willip on 24 July 2003
Dear all,
I just purchased my first set of Naim and am awaiting for delivery. It is CD5/202/200
I am using Dynaudio Contour 1.8Mk2. Anyone tried that combo and is the 200 powerful enough?

Yup the 200 is powerful enough. 250 even better but 300 too good and out of balance IMO.
CD5? Ummmmm....CDX2 would have been a far more sensible choice as the 202/200 over-reveals the CD5.
I'd Upgrade it straight away if I could, if I could afford it.
I really don't believe adding a Hicap to the CD5 is a solution either btw.
Otherwise, great system!!
Make sure you use NACA5 and set the speakers up properly.
Luck

Thanks Joe, the CDX2 is way out of my budget now. I might add a FC2 in the coming months and then change to CDX2 at a much latter stage. I used a Jadis tube amp before getting the new set and the low end control is not that good. Hope to improve on that area or change the speakers to Allae..

Thanks Graham... Actually I have had the CD5 for a few weeks now. Before I let the Jadis go, it is giving me so much pleasure and a few friends who have auditioned it, go for the purchase immediately. 202/200 are all out of stock and shipment on the way. I love those Dynas and really want to reveal their full potential before switching them.
My next upgrade might be the PS for the selection unit for 202 as recommended by the local dealer. Is it the NAPSC? Will the system really improve? Anyhow, need to wait at least burn in the new set. Now the CD5 is plugged in all the time but playing time on it is only around 100 hours.

Willip,
before you go asking yourself questions about future up-grades, I suggest that you get used to the sistem you already have.
There is nothing wrong with your sistem so sit back and listen to the music for six months before deciding on your next purchase.
Regards

A new cd5 w/ a used hi will cost THOUSANDS LESS than a new CDX2 and the price performance ratio is very much in favor of the CD5/used hi. You'll be fine with that front end.
Bob (who has had the aforementioned combinations into 82/sc/250. Don't listen to the spoilers who tell you it isn't good enough before you even get your stuff set up!)

Nothing wrong with that combination. The 200 should be able to make music with the 1.8s. However, the 1.8s would be better controlled with a 250/300/500. I don't agree that they'd be wasted with a big amp since they are difficult to control and the 200 is really the minimum you can get away with in most scenarios. If you can, it would help to get the NAPSC sooner rather than later (a slightly extravagant Christmas present perhaps?). Antything that means the 200 has to give less juice to the preamp will help it drive the 1.8s better.

Frank.

I've never paid that much for a used hi, and although I have seen used CDX2's, I know of none that actually sold. I'd sell mine in a heart beat for 3500, it just isn't worth the money. Additionaly, the original poster already has a new cd5, so placing it's peformance value close to a cdx2 w/a hi is still going to work out for thousands less!

Willip-
I also have a 200/202 combination. It sounds wonderful. Although the performance obviously can be beat by moving up the Naim chain, I think the 200/202 represents great VFM, particularly compared to other gear at that general price range. I want to second the recommendations by others to add the NA PSC. I added mine a couple of months after enjoying the 200/202 and believe it also represents great VFM. I noticed increased clarity, slightly better bass, and improved "separation" of multiple instruments playing simulataneously (I don't know how best to describe that last improvement but Naim gear does it better than any other brand I've ever heard). Adding a NA PSC won't knock your socks off, but you'll notice a difference (particularly after its been warmed up for at least a few days) that is well worth the (relatively) small outlay.
Now if you do want your socks knocked off (or your jaw to drop
), try to add a Hi-Cap. I demoed the 200/202 with and without a Hi-Cap and could not believe how much that little box improved things. I couldn't afford one at the time (still can't), but hope to add one after I upgrade to a Naim CD player.
Best of luck on your new gear. I've never enjoyed music more (and what more can you ask for?).

You're a very lucky guy!
I notice, upon rereading your post, that you weren't soliciting suggestions for upgrades, you were simply asking about the ability of the 200 to drive your speakers. I think that question has been well answered.
Given that you didn't ask for suggestions, but got plenty, here is mine; Upgrade nothing but your music collection. You can be satisfied with this system for the rest of your life, though I do appreciate the wisdom of those who counsel to eventually upgrade the power supplies.

Thanks folks, you guys are wonderful. I am counting days now and the units should arrive in around 2 weeks from now. At the moment, I am trying to burn in my CD5. Too bad that no dealers carry both Dyna and Naim at the same time in my region but I hope it can be a nice match.

Also folks, one of my friends is using a Tag Mclaren pre + power (20/100?) and he has acquired the CD5 after he heard the wonders that were done at my place. Now he is thinking about 112/150, and his speakers are PMC FB1. Do you folks think that can be an improvement? Or it is wiser for him to go for 202/200 as well? Both of us really cant afford the next level up for now.

After having had the 92 for two years and 150 for a year I'd advise him to go for the 202. I'm sure at the 112 level he'd just get restless and want the 202. Or go the used route

Hi,
I'm Willip's friend and using TAG pre+power amp and PMC FB1 speakers. I just bought the CD5 couple of weeks ago. I like it very much.
I'm now considering to upgrade my system in 2-3 months time. Should I go for 112+150 or 202+200 (although the price will be doubled)? Or should I get the Flatcap II for the CD5 first, and then consider to replace my amp in the next step?
Cheers.

I can't comment on whether you should add a flatcap to the CD5. I've demoed the 202/200 and the 112/150 and can tell you that IMHO the 202/200 trounces the 112/150 in every conceivable way. Of course, it is a lot more expensive. Whether it is worth the extra money depends on your preferences and budget. However, if you don't have the money for the 202/200, I'd hold off listening to it - you will not be thrilled with purchasing the 112/150 after listening to the 202/200. (Needless to say, I went with the 202/200 and have no regrets.) Good luck.

Hi,
I've got a 112/150, with CDX into PMC FB1 (plus a FC2 for the 112 and Headline). It sounds great. Of course, more expensive boxes should sound better still, but the 112/150 is fine. Adding a FC2 would power both the 112 and CD5, so is worth thinking about.

elee, as Tag is going to be obsoleted soon. Think seriously please.

Hi All,
Thanks for the comments. But I have limited budget for the upgrade. Either I sell my TAG McLaren pre + power and get 112+150 or or I just purchase the FC2.
Willip,
I know I will be quite tempted to get the 202/200 as I will go to your home to listen to your 202/200 quite often. But my budget won't let me to get it soon.
So folks, I may need your help to make the decision. Really appreciate your help.
Cheers.

Elee. If you like the sound from your new CD5 into the TAG amps and PMC speakers it's maybe not a good idea to change the amps as it might cost you a lot entering the world of Naim amps with their almost endless upgrading possibilities
