Upgradability from CDX to CDX2?

Posted by: gaby yoon on 18 October 2002

Maybe a premature and irrelevant question...

Is there anyone who knows, apart from adding a XPS, if the Naim HQ will offer other solutions for upgrade (including internal modifications) from CDX to CDX2?

What would be the benefits of adding to CDX a XPS2 rather than the old one?

Regards.

Gaby,

Your question is not at all less mature or relevant as most other questions on this forum.
So don'd hesitate to ask.

AFAIK, there is no official update plan for CDX.
The 2 units are totally diferent (new case, new transport, new boards). I can't see any CDX parts that can be reused in a CDX2.
So, IMO, technically, there is no hope for an update plan.
On the marketing side, that's an other story. Naim has already done a special offer for NAIT3 owners to ease the purchase of 112/150. But in this case the price difference gives them a workable margin, it is not the case for CDX. They has never offered an upgrade plan from CD3.5 to CD5.

Your option, if you really want to update: sell your CDX now and puchase a CDX2. CDX has still a good 2nd hand value.

They have said, they will come with a cosmetic update plan for power amps and PSUs.
IMO, if your unit has more than a power switch on the front panel, forget the update.

I hope they indicate on the back if it's an old, old new, new old, or brand new NAP250.

2nd hand buying is going to be fun. "Is that a real NAP200?"

Mike,

The rear panel will probably stay unchanged, to keep the model and serial numbers.

Just cosmetic change? What for ?
Personally I like quite a lot the 'olive' version.

Hope that there'll be a comparative report about sound caracteristics of the old and new gears.

The cosmetic change is interresting for people upgrading in the near future, and willing to have all the kit with the same look.

As for direct comparaison, I'm waiting for the new stock to arrive. I've listened to it, but have not got the opportunity to play with it.

There will have to be a significant improvement in the CDX2 to justify selling my CDX and purchasing a CDX2. In real terms its going to cost around £1,000 to upgrade.

Has anyone done a CDX, CDX2 comparrison yet?
