Connection from HDMI to 282

The subject is probably misleading.

For a long time I have been deciding whether to spend my money on more or better naim or on a flat panel tv. For once, my decision went against Naim... Cool

In the end, I got this.
http://www.cnetasia.com/reviews/home_av/tvs/0,39037594,61956559,00.htm

the 42 inch version.

Anyway, back to my question. If i get a DVDplayer which has a HDMI connection, how do I playback the sound through my 282.

Currently, I have a dvdplayer and the picture is connected through the component out on the dvdp and audio is thru the RCA out to the 282's RCA.

However the HDMI carries both the audio and the picture signal, so how do I achieve that?

Or do I have to connect from the dvdplayer thru the HDMI to the plasma and then from some audio out on the plasma to the 282?

Use the RCA phono jacks on the back of the DVD player, just as always–HDMI is not the exclusive transport layer for audio, just a way to get it into the TV speakers (for those who use the Pioneer as a standard TV).

Hi David,
thanks for your reply.
In your suggested connection, the audio signal from the dvdplayer would be transmitted to both the TV and to the 282?

Or will the audio signal be automatically disabled from the HDMI connection once the RCA phono jacks are in use?

Probably both.

Wouldn't you just mute the tv speakers?

I guess i will turn the volume on the TV to zero then. Muting the TV usually ends with up with a 'mute' logo on the TV.

Some TVs permit you to turn off the speakers explicitly–I'd try this first.

(We have a Panasonic plasma that provides an optical out from the over-the-air HD tuner–this stream tracks the TV volume, but does not produce any sound when speakers are "off" for example.)

I've had 3 Pioneer Plasmas and have just bought the 507 this week. None of them show a 'mute' logo on the scren whilst muted.

The Pioneer guys are coming to install the plasma this coming Saturday. Anything I should look out for in particular?

Usually in the sound menu somewhere:-
(mine suggests "internal speakers on/off").

When off, the logo is there for 10secs and then disapears forever

I've got a DVD player/freeview/HDD machine connected to my Naim preamp via the audio phono sockets, and mute the TV sound. The 'Mute' logo disappears after a few seconds. I'm thinking of getting an external DAC to improve the sound into the Naim system though.

Any recommendations on which HDMI cable to get from a choice of QED, Chord and Atlas?
Or is it a matter of getting the cheapest available?

I can recommend the Chord HDMI Silver Plus cable. Don't know how good it is compared to others but it does a fine job for me.

Nick.

/me wonders to myself...

Is it really worth about 80 pounds getting a Chord HDMI cable given that I am currently given a "no brand" HDMI cable....?

Did you buy a good screen?

If you had a ferrari, would you use cheap tyres and Tesco's petrol.

Cool

I just realised that the Chord HDMI is a no go for me. The PDP427XG comes with 2 HDMI inputs and I realised that they are physically quite close to each other. The Chord HDMI has a huge “sleeve” and I think it would most probably be blocking the other HDMI input when connected.

You will be able to use two Chord HDMI cables. I am using both as of last week, one for the DVD5 and one for my new cable TV DVR.

Hi Nike
Is that from your experience with the 507?

Yes - That is correct.
