The previous thread 'what book are you reading' has been closed but may I please recommend this book...?

Hi Stephen, I'm sure you'll enjoy it, I've read it twice and will do again in a year or so.

This is the book that has kick started a long term foray into history that I'd not encountered before. Any Roman history I knew was of the timid , rather lame kind they teach in secondary schools from time to time.

Since this book however I've gone on to a further dozen and there are no signs of a let up yet. I've dipped into Greek ancient history too and it's awash with utter fascination and wonderful characters along with a view of times entirely different to our own but peopled with all the same human bizarreness. Quite entrancing.

Regards, Paul.

Reading it for the third time. One of Le Carre's first novels (written in 1965) and definitely one of his best.
