Washing machines

Posted by: Kevin-W on 23 July 2007

Hi all.

I have to buy a new washing machine, our trusty 15 year old Hoover has expired (sob).

I have up to £280 to spend. I don't need a washer/drier, just a washer, and one that's as energy efficient as poss. Have looked around John Lewis but am completely at a loss as to what to buy (I'd like a Miele but can't afford one!).

Any suggestions most appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I lived with a German family on Waiheke Island many years ago. They had paid to freight all of their Miele appliances to New Zealand when they immigrated - the mother couldn't bear to leave them behind in Germany.

This was in the late 1980s - their Miele clothes drier had a sensor rather than a timer - something that Fisher & Paykel years later built into some their driers (and they charged a lot for it too - as if it was cutting edge stuff...)

I'm sure that Miele give theirs away free of charge.

It was just that Miele was years ahead of anything that was available in NZ at the time. And then Fisher & Paykel made a song and dance about how advanced it was for one of their clothes driers to be available with a moisture sensor.

I have a range of AEG appliances and unfortunately have to agree they have gone downhill fast. WHile living in the USA I did however live in an apartment with Maytag appliances and my goodness theyn were out of this world - huge capacity, quiet running and washed and dried clothes in about half the time our AEG takes - I was staggered by how brilliant they were.

Wife wouldn't buy anything else in future!
