A Leaden Pall

Posted by: Diode100 on 21 August 2007

I bit the bullet at the weekend, I was in HMV looking for something to fix me, when I noticed the Half Man Half Biscuit section had a disc sticking out prominently marked up at a fiver, turned out it was a single, but never the less it got me sifting through the rack. A murky grey cover loomed out, entitled A Leaden Pall, at last i'd discovered Kitchen Sink rock, and only thirteen quid ! I've listened to it a couple of times, I'm not rushing it, it's to be savoured. sounds a bit like (only a bit though)john Oatway & wild willy barret, but i always liked them anyway, Louisa on a Horse etc. A Leaden Pall indeed, I'm going to enjoy this.

This Leaden Pall -

My favourite HMHB album.

Improv Workshop Mimeshow Gobshite and 4AD 3D CD, being 2 standouts.

Morning All

Diode - you will now find yourself back-cataloguing HMHB at a steady rate. Everyone has their own HMHB faves - mine is "Cammell Laird Social Club" which has some of their best, cleverest and damn funniest lyrics IMHO.

Go onto their website and link to Action records - a lot cheaper than stores and a further discount as well from the link.

"I'm off to see the Bootleg Beatles - as the bootleg Mark Chapman"

Priceless

Welcome to the Fanstastic world of HMHB.

In my opinion This Leaden Pall whilst a good album by any standard is perhaps (Along with 'MacIntyre Treadmore and Davitt') one of their less listenable albums.

Go out and buy them all now if you like what you've heard so far. I've said it before here and I'll say it again.....how many 10+ album bands can you honestly say haven't had a lean patch musically? HMHB are the only band I know who fit this description.

I can see why some people wouldn't like them at all, but if you do the back catalogue will never fail you. The seemingly endless funny/banal/surreal lyrics have seen me through almost 20 years now.

PS the official website is a great resource and has tons of free downloadable tracks.

Well what can I say Diode100 without sounding like somebody who feels you have just become acquainted with the Father, Son and Mickey Most - This Leaden Pall is just the thing to put on after Crispy Ambulance whilst approaching Knutsford City Limits.

HMHB are a great band with superb material from Nigel Blackwell and I think surpass that other fine band Joe Public And The General Consensus, not to mention Evil Gazebo.

This Leaden Pall is a fine album. If you want to try another one then give Cammell Laird Social Club a go - it's HMHB at its most accessible.

The EPs are great too - Editor's Recommendation with its superb opener Bob Wilson - Anchorman? and Saucy Haulage Ballads.

One of my favourite HMHB tracks is David Wainwright's Feet - what a truly great song, if you compare the other songs on that compilation with it then it makes everything sound AOR.

So here are some links to Paintball, and a vintage OGWT performance of All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit and one of my favourites and perhaps the first known rendition of a HMHB song - by none other than George Formby.

Happy listening, Rotf
