Moon Landing. Fact or Fiction.
Posted by: _charlie on 08 October 2007
Until recently I had never heard of the conspiracy theory that we never landed on the moon. Given recent fuel by a Fox documentary that gave credence to those who doubted we ever landed on the moon and that the whole thing was filmed in a studio. I've even heard one theory that has movie director Stanley Kubrick directing the whole enterprise. He was apparently rewarded by with use of a special NASA camera worth one million to film interiors of 'Barry Lyndon'.
If you look at the rock labeled R you will notice a the letter C carved in the rock. Perhaps a gag left by the props department?
A recent poll of Americans revealed that fully 20% of them believe the Apollo Missions were faked.
Anyone familiar with these or similar claims ?
Bizarre stuff and, I think, a rather poor reflection of the times. People, it seems, have so little faith in their higher institutions.

Groan. Not again. It's total bollocks spread by a bunch of scientifically and technically illiterate ignoramuses and believed by the gullible. Check out this which quickly debunks all the nonsense. It pains me that people are so badly educated these days that they're willing to believe a bunch of loonies rather than marvel at the greatest scientific and technical achievement of all time.

I agree 100% - a very poor reflection of the times.
The whole thing was obviously set up by and staged by the CIA operatives who created staggered detonations to bring down the WTC -not.
I have to say that I am fully engrossed in all things nasa and apollo of late. There is a new Ron Howard doc called shadow of the moon coming soon which looks really good - great timing for the anniversary and much needed by the look of things. I am also pleased that the it appears that I might get to see a man walk on Mars in my life time.
As an aside, the book 'Moondust' is a brilliant read and contains great inverviews and insights from the remaining moonwalkers how still live to tell the tale. Nasa will have to get it's arse fully in gear or we we will return to the situation or no living person who can say they walked on another planet.

No living person has ever walked on a planet other than Earth.

True.

"The issue of a clear definition for "planet" came to a head in 2005 with the discovery of the trans-Neptunian object Eris, a body larger than the smallest then-accepted planet, Pluto. In its 2006 response, the International Astronomical Union (IAU), recognised by astronomers as the world body responsible for resolving issues of nomenclature, released its decision on the matter. This definition, which applies only to the Solar System, states that a planet is a body that orbits the Sun, is large enough for its own gravity to make it round, and has "cleared its neighbourhood" of smaller objects.
Pluto does not qualify as a planet under this definition, and the Solar System is thus considered to have eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The new category of dwarf planet was created, currently including Pluto, Eris, and Ceres. The IAU's decision has not resolved all controversies, however, and some in the astronomical community have rejected it outright. The issue of what constitutes a planet will likely remain contentious at least until 2009, when the IAU holds its next Congress in Rio de Janeiro"

It seems strange to create a definition for planet solely for our solar system. If we found in a nearby solar system a body large enough for its own gravity to make it round, had cleared its neighbourhood of smaller objects and was proven to support life yet remained in orbit to a larger celestial body other than its own sun would we call it a moon?

As Homer Simpson maintains, Fox is celebrated as the home of quality programming.
70% of Americans also believe in God.

Quite some assertion.
I am surprised that Nigel agreed so readily.

Why? It is factually correct.

Absolutely correct the moon is an earth satellite, not a planet. They are a bit further away.

I would certainly agree. Trouble is, when I google 'moon landing' nearly one third of the entries are about, 'Moon Landing Hoax'.
The internet may be the great revolution of the past few decades but it is also polluted with a lot of misinformation.

Despite the rather narrow definition posted above for a planet within our solar system, the term planet is still widely adopted to describe similar satellites of other stars ie other solar systems.
There is no certainty that the earth and us are the only planet/life arrangement in this (or any other) universe.
Cheers

Person refers to homo sapiens only. There may be millions of planets teeming with life out there but the only one that has had a person walk on it is Earth.
Posted on: 09 October 2007 by Simon Matthews
Assuming identical dna 'humans' have not evolved in distant galaxies. A statistical possibility given the shere scale of numbers.
Just a thought.
Just a thought.

Not true. The word 'person' means 'born one of a parent' - hence the word 'personality', which animals certainly have, even though they are not human.

Lovely as she is my Yorkshire terrier is not a person.

Special pleading, Don. The context of the thread is quite clear.

Here's some more read on the subject from Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy:

I wasn't aware of any special pleading on my part.
I agree, the context of the thread is clear. Bob widened the context with his general statement. If he had intended to confine his claim to this solar system, he should have said so - he didn't. There could well be other solar/planet systems with life-forms.
You and Bob were narrow-mindedly nit-picking about the moon/planet arrangement in our solar system and had overlooked the wider picture.
BTW, I couldn't see the significance of the adjective "living" (as in "no living person has ever walked on a planet other than Earth"). Grateful you explain.
Cheers

Explain? You were trying to be clever and it didn't work.

"Explain? You were trying to be clever and it didn't work."
Oh, but it did! and I was just being accurate, not clever.
You've missed the point again.
Explain the reason for the "living"
Cheers

Obviously there are two meanings; the planet walkers are now dead, or people walked on planets while dead.
Keep up, man, for heavens sake.

Mike,
Infantry to the rescue yet again!
I must be loosing it big-time these days. Your explanation is so obvious and straightforward. I just can't imagine how this explanation never crossed my mind.
Perhaps Nigel can now confirm that his understanding matches your explanation......or provide his own?
Cheers
