Recording Information

While listening to - Swingin' New Big Band - a live recording by Buddy Rich, i noticed a statement by the producer's Bob Belden and Dean Pratt.
Producer's note:
When the original LP was issued(1965), the four-track master had been compressed and EQed so that a stereo and mono mix could be made from the same master. By re-mixing without compression and EQ, we have restored the fullness to the original master tapes, but have altered the stereo mix to a certain degree.
Buddy Rich's drums are now panned in stereo across the bandstand, the piano is fully on the left, the bass in left centre, and the horns are in stereo, brass left and saxes right. Buddy's drums "bleed" into all open microphones and as a result, can be heard on all tracks.
The soloists all use one microphone and were sometimes late getting to the mark, resulting in an "off mic" sound.
If only more cds had this kind of info, it is of help to those listeners who may have wondered, why this cd may have sounded wrong.

The cd is on the Pacific Jazz/ Blue Note label
