Naim DAC / Lavry / Amarra / HiFace

Posted by: paremus on 31 December 2009

Having borrowed the Naim DAC for the weekend I intended to test it against my Lavry - with my Mac Mini /Amarra / HiFace source.

Unfortunately there is a slightly more fundamental hurdle. On power up the Naim logo on the DAC lights up - the HD <> Sync flash alternatively for a while then nothing.

The control buttons do not light up and I can get no audio from either Coax or Optical or the USB / iPhone.

Link between the DAC and the 52 is a Highline and the audio out switch is set to DIN.

Any ideas?

There is now of course the new small Weiss firewire interface the INT202 which is cheaper and has a remote controlled volume!
That and either the new Naim dac or the ax24 might be interesting to compare with my Weiss DACII.
That all makes sense.

My preferred choice would be to use a dedicated desktop solution using either MADI/SDIF-3 for 24/384 DSD support etc., or indeed a PC laptop that supports an ExpressCard 34mm so I can use a RME HDSPe MADIface, though limited to 192. I'll send you an update once my Mac Mini is back from repair, and maybe catch-up for a listen.

Peter Hi how much is the RME? I started to look at Madi but the cards /interface were extremely expensive $3000 a board if I recall.

The price of a good laptop, though the standard AX24 comes with the MADI interface in either 24/192 or 24/384. SPDIF module is optional. Mind you, I don't currently have MADI, but will plan to order a module soon. By all accounts it's the end game! Peter

Peter Hi, yes I remember madi being an expensive option, I undersand madi for a pro studio with many devices huge bandwidth, but it just seems a little ott for domestic two channel, if I do decide to go for an AX24 I think I will sell the DACII and buy one of the new Weiss firewire interfaces, there is even a remote control for volume, I only have one source, I believe the price is going to be around £700.
