Speakers for my iMAC ?
Posted by: long-time-dead on 29 March 2006
Nice and simple solution, I hope.....
My iMAC G5 sits in a room of it's own - away from the main living room and will, eventually, get linked to the main hifi system wirelessly.....
That's in the future but I want to have better sounds out of the Mac in it's own room (the internal speakers are OK but just OK).
Now the rub, I want something simple yet good. No DACs, Naits, Kans or the like. Just a simple plug and play option.
The Harmon Kardon soundsticks/sub combo look the part - do they sound OK ?
Anyone got any ideas ?

LTD,
A thread from earlier
Speakers for Mac that may give you some pointers. I'm still using the ancient Sony active speakers as the stereo is usually on behind me. Hope it helps.

LTD (Do you have a name BTW?)
The soundstick are indeed very good. I have the USB version which on the new iMac seems a little flaky when they work they are fine but something somewhere is screwing with the sound settings.
If you have a G5 iMac then this is not an issue are are the very best sulotion as there is software built into mac for them allowing a myriad more options for sound output than a traditional mini jack speaker.
However I do not believe these are available any more so you would et the mini jack pair, which are also excellent, buy with confidence, they have the iGary seal of approval!
A bit less is the creature speaker but they are very tinny in comparison the istick combo is a much fuller sound.
After that you are pretty much into PC territory where style has no place, so grey or black square speaker boxes it is then. You choose.

The iMac/iStick combo in her natural environment. Note the lack of sticky paper notes, spare internal computer parts and black grey boxes

Glad to read that, yet again regarding the iMac, my initial research seems to be the MO to follow.
I saw the "cretaures" and thought they looked vile. Listening to them was never going to be an option......
My desk is usually kept as "clean" as yours now - that's the beauty of the Mac. I used to doubt it but don't know. My sticky notes are now a widget and my desk diary is now an iCal.
My name - you can all call me Steve if you wish.....

Haha, nice one Steve. Steve seems good, its probably not your name but better than Dead I reckon.
Yes the creatures were fun, I had a set for the Ipod at work, but they did sound shit, two little tinny noises on the side and a bloomy noise in the middle.
The sticks are a different beast altogether. Looking at the website I see some new ones, but have not heard them
