Leo Kottke, has any one heard of him?

Posted by: oldie on 12 December 2003

I have just recently discovered Leo kottke, I know he has been around for years ,but I'm a slow learner Smile. His voice is not exactly appealing Frown, but his playing is something else, especially when he plays "bottle neck" so far I have managed to buy :-
6&12 String Guitar
Guitar Music
One Guitar No Vocals
Ice Water.
Has anybody else out there had any experience of this man's music and if they have, any recomendations would be appreciated, bearing in mind,I would prefer mainly his non vocal and especially his bottle neck/slide technique way of playing
Thanks in anticipation,
oldie.

From what you say, I imagine that if you like Leo Kottke, you would probably far prefer John Fahey. Similar guitar technique, [well, better in my opinion] but without those annoying vocals. Almost any of his albums can be recommended - check out Amazon.com for some samples.

Yep!

Album to get is Standing in My Shoes. Great record. I use it at show occasionaly. Another Kottke album that I also enjoy is Great Big Boy.

Leo--one of my faves!

Albums I'd recommend, beyond what you have, include "Great Big Boy," "Peculiaroso," "A Shout Toward Noon," and "Live." Terrific player, rather a wry sense of humor...

Fahey is also very good, but to suggest "you would probably far prefer" him is simply ludicrous and egotistical...

Enjoy!

'Ludicrous', 'Egotistical', Bob - how d'you work that out? Oldie was saying he preferred Kottke without vocals. The styles are very similar, and if you like bottle/slide guitar, Fahey is a rich vein to mine.I offered my humble opinion, which oldie can check out, or not.

Snappiness is not an attractive trait.

Throb--

What you did was to superimpose your own taste onto what Oldie asked. And in so doing, you diminish his opinion and interest in favor of your own. Make sense?

I get really tired of people trying to superimpose their own tastes/worldviews onto others. If you had said something like "Leo is very good, and if you like him, you might also enjoy John Fahey" I wouldn't have said a thing. But by saying "you would probably far prefer John Fahey" you go too far...

Best,

Bob

Semantics, Bob - actually you've encapsulated exactly what I meant. No views, world or otherwise were intended to be imposed. I like instrumental Leo too. It's just the vocals, - hence my original post.

Doug is right. 'Standing In My Shoes' is also superbly recorded and produced by David Z.

Am I the only one who finds these 'smileys' really annoying?
Posted on: 12 December 2003 by oldie

Oh shit!

What have I done?
Posted on: 13 December 2003 by oldie
Hi folks,
I decided that I couldn't wait until after all of the Lep Kottke cd's had arrived from Amazon. com so on the pretext of helping my better half with the shopping "just happened" to nip into the local Borders and "come across" a few John fahey cd's so I ended up buying two of his earler ones :- the Legend of Blind Joe Death and The Dance of Death & Other Plantation Favorites
I have only had time to listen to the first one Joe Death but so far it's very good. Now as bankruptcy and divorce looms, please no more recommendationsor "A" the forum is going to lose a member. "B" Mrs oldie will be seeking some form of retribution, either financially or may be the removal of someones limbs.
So thanks again folks, you were all right!!!
