CDS3 vs. CDS2 etc etc

Posted by: Jonathan Hales on 06 November 2003

Well, a new CDS3 is sitting at the top of my Fraim with the illuminated logos all out of whack with the rest of my kit, but what the hell. Its had a week or so to start telling its story and make an account for itself and it goes like this I guess.

First impressions were a brooding monster awoken from a deep sleep. A bit like a Formula 1 car on cold tyres. Each succesive evening I have done the sonic dissection and gone to bed (usually late) astounded by its talent, depth of ability and all round improvement within my system.

Two things are key in my view. Relatively speaking, its a bargain if its wholesale changes being considered from olive boxes to the new range for the simple reason that it has breathed huge amounts of new life into my 52/250/SBL's. Sure, a 552 would be a huge leap again, and yes, a 300 or 500 and SL2's fantastic, but for now, I am utterly blown away by what the new player does and the margin it gives for everything.

It is a vast improvement over the earlier model and still improving each day. It has an almost supernatural quality about its delivery, whereas music came out of the speakers with a CDS2, something more alive and stunningly realistic happens with the 3.

It has to be one of Naims biggest achievements after the 500. It is worth every penny.

Naim used to run a print ad years ago when it launched the Aro arm that said, "Now find out what's on your record collection.

I am now finding what's on my CD collection. For example, backup vocals never heard before, instruments previously absent within a huge presentation that is so smooth it doesnt sound as though the volume is up until you leave the room to make a cuppa or another slug of Chardonnay and realise the house is creaking and windows being blown in.

IMO at least the best equipment analogy I can give (though its been a while since I have heard it) is the full active system my brother had before he took the 500 plunge.

It really is that close on its own.

Hats off Naim.

Andrew,

You are one of the most perceptive people I have never met.

Yes, I thought this was quite subdued but Ritchie the great Dane has me on a good behaviour bond.

Johnathan,

You have not heard anything yet. It took my CDS3 four weeks to break in, and it keeps getting better.

I sold my CDS2 so long ago I can't offer a direct comparison, but the new player is amazing.

Chris,

I think mine had been shop run-in but I have heard it takes about 8 weeks to really hum.

Hell, I cant imagine what it is in store if there is anything more to come.

It's a beast.

Jonathan

My '3' seemed to take a real leap in performance, about a month in.

A friend running his into 552/500 reckoned on two months for the full Montague.

It is of course, better than a '2' but also rather different in its sonic signature and presentation.

I'm waiting for someone to say that they prefer the sound of the '2'.
Posted on: 06 November 2003 by Jonathan Hales
If they do, I think it will be sour grapes.

There is no way it is better or even 'different' irrespective of 'where you are coming from'

It must get the analog buffs to finally roll over, surely?

I think people use to say the same things about the 1 vs. 2. Dont get me wrong, it proves in many ways what a great machine the 2 is but I just couldnt live with it again having heard it in my context not a shop listening room with a 552, 500 and NBL's.

If you dont want to take the risk just stay well away. Wont you dont know cant hurt

Possibly - I've yet to hear the 3.

I know that in my opinion the 2 walks all over the cds - spits it out - kicks its ass - goes back, p*sses all over it...

invites it back for another fight when its mates 250 and sbl are there coz the cds deserves a kicking for pretending to be what it manifestly is not.....

but..let's look at the inter-relationship of the cdps and the power supplies.

I have a cdx/xps and it is gorgeous.

If I were looking to upgrade my logic says CDS3 and keep my xps but I've been told that the XPS2 transforms any Naim CDP !!

It's not simple!

Yes,

I have to say I felt like I went from Meg Ryan straight to Ciccicolina (about 10 years ago of course) and missed all the steps in between.

I wished I had kept the CDS2 at home a bit longer and done: Burndy, then XPS2 old transport and could have commented on this.

No huge sacrifice.

Hang on, from Meg Ryan to Cicciolina? What, the ugly Italian porn star with the fake boobs? Roll Eyes

As a CDS2 owner (now a 'classic' obviously) I know what you mean. Give me Meg anyday.

Actually there are lots of people who prefer the CDS1 to the 2 - just as in about five years there will be others who prefer the 2 to the 3. Hard to imagine now perhaps, but I'd lay odds on it.

Chris

I had CDX/XPS and went to XPS2 a couple of months ago. However I did not try CDS3/XPS. However to go XPS-> XPS2 cost me £1000, to go CDX ->CDS3 will cost £3500 ish, a big differance.

The XPS2 is well worthwhile.

I meant in the sense that I went from polite but nice girl next door to just plain dirty.

I would never dare take a CDS3 home to meet me mum.

It would keep trying to put its hand down me jeans while the old dear was pouring the tea.

sorry if this question has already been discussed -- must have missed. i would like to hear from those who assessed XPSII upgrade to CDSII in comparison with full upgrade to cdsii -- what were your findings?

i.e. how close was xpsii/cds2 to cdsiii??

enjoy

Rico, what's that then?

Some awful test track by another one of those derro sounding male vocalists the Wgtn Naim fraternity insist on using?

Did you know bucket boy with the lump on his head did an album just before he parked it that is a good test album for the CDS3 with classics such as "Shuffling into town" and "dying in a gutter"?

Really good for bass response and timing.

I will stick to my George Formby if you dont mind.

What do you use to keep the lid clean?

Go The All Blacks!

'The Ballard of Chasey Lain'? Is that a kind of suburban sci-fi writer meets aging porn star movie? Sounds like a must see...

I think you two may be talking aboot the same thing. "Bucket man" AKA "Lump boy" was ALSO known in some quarters as "Cheesy Iain". "The ballad of Cheesy Iain" is on the very same CD as the aforementioned "dying" and "shuffling" along with the classic "Where's me lump gawn ?" and "Seven miles of anal piles".

Does this help ?

P.S. I use a little thing called SOAP to keep MY lid clean.

Now...what rock is he hiding under....

Gentlemen

1. Said ballard comes from well afield of Wellington, and is found on this fine album. It is about as far west of the "Some awful test track by another one of those derro sounding male vocalists the Wgtn Naim fraternity insist on using?" as one might get. The music is dirty, nasty, cheesey fun. A good jump further to the left from your Meg Ryan ---> Ciccicolina vector, really.

2. "What do you use to keep the lid clean?" My wife.

3. Yeah baby, the All Blacks went!

4. Come on mink-man, what's up wid de router?

Rico,

No, he spent the dough on a Black and Decker workmate and attempting to run an Ipod (unamplified) to the DBL's.

Jonathan

Hmmm. so workmate is the new mana?

iPod. "nice". Still, I can't talk. I'm now looking for a drill-press. Confused
