Montreal

I am considering spending a few days in Montreal on my way to a skiing trip nearby. What is there to do in the city?

At this time of year? How do you tell?

My Montreal memory: Summer, late night cocktails, bar next to a swimming pool, very warm evening. Pool was on the roof of a high-rise hotel; I was handing a small towel to a very beautiful and even more naked French girl, as she climbed out of the water. Can't remember what the hotel was called. Sorry!

If you like a good steak there is a restaurant just opposite the Sheraton (Can't recall it's name... help me somebody!) that will delight you. You can see the cuts stacked up in the "aging" room through a window from the street. Nicely theatrical service but you pay for the privilege...

Oh, and gorgeous women... Roll on the show in April...!!

John,

there are many good places to go, and if food is your desire the choices are many.

For a restaurant, Gibby's in Old Montreal is a long time favorite. You may wish to hit Cresent Street for some bar action, between St. Catherines and Maisoneuve. There is plenty of underground shopping along St. Catherines downtown.

For more food and drinks, there is St. Larent above Sherbrooke. Globe used to be great for beautiful women, and the restaurant across the street the name of which escapes me. Sofia on the corner of Prince Auther is great. For smoked meat sandwiches: Schwatz's up the street.

For a whisky, the is L'il Noire on Ontario st. which is a pub/whiskey bar.And the Whiskey Cafe up St. Laurent a ways.

If you haven't had a Montreal Bagel there are 2 spots off of Parc Avenue, St. Viateur is one.

Whatever hotel you are at will be able to direct you to the hot spots, and every cab driver in downtown Montreal can find or recommend cool spots to go.

A great city to visit. Hope you have a great trip.

PS. Winter has not been normal out there this year, but if it shows up while you are there, be prepared for frigid temperatures, and the wind coming off of the mountain is nasty....so dress accordingly.

Montreal's a great place - I was there in October 2005, where they had unseasonal temperatures of 29 degrees. I know that winter has finally come to Ottawa, so I'd imagine that things are similar in Montreal.

If you're a classical music fan, then Montreal has an excellent Symphony Orchestra. I was really hoping to be able to hear them when I was over there - just my luck that they were still on strike at the time!

Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll have a great time!

Montreal is a truly fabulous place, particularly if you like to listen to people playing guitars till late at night. The old town has plenty of this, some terrific food, and some pretty passable micro-breweries.

Beware the tipping! All waiting staff will expect a tip, and although I can't remember the required percentage, it tends to work out close to the tax portion of the bill which could well be 15-20 percent. If you don't tip enough, they will come back to you and firmly ask for it. There's no real problem with this, but food & drink is never the bargain it initially seems because of this.
