Ozric Tentacles, where to start?

Synchronicity.

I've just arrived back from Bristol. On the way back I was listening to Hillage's "Fish Rising", and it struck me that it was a kind of missing link between National Health or the Hatfields and Ozric Tentacles.

There are more knowledgeable Ozric fans on here than me, but I have to say they're all very good and pretty similar, my favourite (by a whisker) is Jurassic Shift but that could be because it was the first one I bought!

Blimey, now that is a question. I first saw the Ozrics a long-long time ago when I was about 14 or 15.. So, what CD's to buy ? Well.. I kind of became a bit Ozric'd out after 10 albums and Merv left to form Eat Static circa 1992/3 so my opinion is strictly pre 93.

And it all depends on what level of Ozric-ness you want.

1. Slower swooshiness and synthscapes.

I'd go for something like Erpland, Tantric Obstacles, There Is Nothing or Sliding Gliding Worlds.

2. Faster swooshiness and synthscapes.

Try Strangitude, Pungent Effulgent or Jurrasic Shift.


I have noticed that a number of discount CD retailers are doing double Ozric CD's for cheapo prices. I've always thought that the earlier albums were the best and the 6 CD Box set 'Vitamin Enhanced' is a great starter (If you can locate it !)

is probably a very good word to describe what's happened to (at least) two of the replies on this thread

Thanks for the tips Alan, Amazon have Strangeitude and Pungent whatsit as a cheapo double CD so I'll try the faster swooshiness then I might try the Erpland for some slower swooshiness.

Its amazing what passes you by when you take your eye off the ball as I did from c. 1985, that's the year I go married, is there a link here?

It's like any great band with a long winding history..some are better to some than others..

I think that 'classic' Ozrics, the best period iMHo is really condensed into the Ed/Joie/Merv/Roly ( then Zia) period...

( IMHO - any/all of these should be in ANY space/ Phsyc / prog collection )

Lots of these ideas were recorded on the Ozrcis 'tapes' which are now a fiver each, and double on CD's for £8..

Newer ones are still good, but slightly different
Waterfall Cities ( still cuts the MUSTARD)
Become the other
etc

New live one is very good too.. But I am biased as I love them too much!!
