Speaker Hiss

Posted by: seamus88 on 10 December 2003

Hello all and Happy Festivus,

After several months of searching for, purchasing and rebuilding I finally have all the pieces.

The system:

Rega Planet 2000
NAIM 110
HICAP
32.5 with 72 boards
Totem Staff Speakers
Naim Speaker Cable
Black Snaic's

The Problem:

The speakers hiss; in particular, the tweeter.

The Solution:

Please advise?!

Thanks, Cheers, Seamus

You don't say how obtrusive the hiss is. If you can hear it from your listening seat when system is quiet or muted or on low level program then there is something wrong, but if you have to get close to the speakers then this is normal. My sistem has a hiss from the treble units but only noticeable when I put my ears right up to the tweeter.

Mine hisses as well, I suppose if you sit about 1-2 metres away and have very good hearing you can hear it from the seating position, I can just hear it on mine from the seat. It's obviously normal with Naim systems.

Perfectly normal.

I have a 32.5 and my system hisses slightly louder since I changed to the 72 boards.

Hello all,

Thanks for the responses.

It seems as though what I am hearing is normal. I am going to test a different set of speakers today. Stay tuned.

Would adding a Chord Interconnect from source to pre-amp help?

Cheers, Seamus

It would help Chord.

I don't find any problems with the Naim supplied interconnect, myself.

A subject once JV had the following answer to:

Subject: hiss

The hiss from the speakers is quite normal, specially when the phono
input is selected.

There are two issues, one: the DBLs are very efficient compared to
most other speakers and therefore the hiss will sound about twice as
loud as it would for the same volume setting using other speakers.
(and the music would also be about twice as loud if you happened to be
playing music rather than listening to the hiss).

Second: the way that our pre-amps are designed, the noise is such that
it is always masked by the noise from the source, ie the background
noise off vinyl (the worst case) is some 6dB noisier than the pre-amp
noise.

The 52 has a remote control - try reducing the volume or pressing
'mute' to reduce the hiss when not listening to music.

Hi musfed,

Thanks for sharing this e-mail. Since I started this thread, I made a decision to obtain different speakers. I have changed from the Sttaf to B & W CDM 7NT. I am pleased with the new speakers.
