What's the best streaming source for my nDac ???

Posted by: RudiNee on 21 October 2010

I'm sure this discussion has been held before here, but I could need some help. My current system consists of:
- Sonos ZP90, connected with a
- Audioquest Eagleeye to the
- Naim Dac, connected via the
- Naim Highline to the
- 122x/150x/fc2x to a pear of
- Totem Model-1 Sigs.

What could improve mu source the most without spending foolish mone. I kind of think the nServe is a bit too much (3k euro). I use XLD as a ripper and have a QNap nas, so I oly need a decent streamer. Alternatives could be:

- Mac Mini with M2 highface (I tried the Ayrewav palyer on my current mac and that sounds great).
- Linn DS Majik or Sneaky (Is there a difference between them through digital out?)
- Olive 4HD?

- Or something else????
I at least want to reach the level of my old cd5x/fc2x or higer ;-)

Cheers.

Qute, acting as streamer only?

Best VFM, IMHO.

Allen, did you finish the tests between Qute and INT202?

I'm surprised with your findings and wait for the possible disclaimer from your side Winker

Borrowed HDX & Qute have to be returned. Frown But new Qute, and Serve are picked up today Cool

Expect a few postings over the next week or so Big Grin

Look forward to your reports. Qute sounds like a good idea, but why shell out £££ for the Serve? Surely a mini PC with the free Vortexbox installed will do the same for under £300.....

The UnitiQute surely. A super bit of kit that includes a very good radio.

Sure but then one must ask what servers are the best and actually work well with the Qute.

I am trying to be interested in this product but I haven't the slightest clue other than the assumption that the Naim servers work well, which the op might not be interested in.

Is a Naim server required to guarantee seamless operation?

What servers has Naim tested with their streaming product and the app?

Hi Plinko

Sorry for delay in answering, picked up my amps following servicing Fri: reinstalled yesterday and was immersed in the music. Smile

Yes, absolutely the Qute, even when the amps are not in use it is excellent VFM IMHO. As AllenB has been telling us it does the job very well indeed, and the radio really is excellent which is a nice bonus. Also, if later a better source becomes available the Qute can be moved to another room as a stand-alone solution. Excellent.

The servers that Naim have tested and found to work with their products are listed in the ‘sticky’ on the front page of Distributed Audio section, there is also a tool so that anyone who already has a NAS can test it for themselves for likely suitability.

So, the question as to whether or not a Naim server is essential to reliable operation is no. I have been streaming from a NAS all day for the past 5 weeks, 7days a week into the Qute without a single issue. Importantly you need a reliable network, but this can be achieved quite cheaply nowadays, mine is fully wired and works without issue.
