Quartet recommendations please
Posted by: Milo Tweenie on 16 March 2006
Would you knowledgeable folk like to point me in the right direction for some string (or wind) quartet music please? I have a basic collection of symphonies and would like to branch out a bit.
Composers from the classical and romantic periods seem to suit me best. Any suggestions as to where to start?
Many thanks

The best recorded performance of the Ravel and Debussy quartets I've ever heard is by the Ysaÿe Quartet, released on the London label in 1991. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be in print.

Fredrik---At your suggestion I purchased the Haydn Op.77 quartets by the Mosaiques Qr. I was not really familiar with many of the Haydn string quartets and certainly not these pieces. I must say this is a fabulous recording--the works, the playing, and the recording. This certainly is among the best string quartet recordings I have ever heard. Thanks for the recommendation!

dear Olnslow,
Not bad at all, really. If only all HIP perforances were this fine. This is a perfect disc on so many levels to introduce people to the quartet genre, I am sure you would agree!
I am glad you like it, from Fredrik

Just wanted to say how much I appreciated all your suggestions.
Over the last few weeks I've obtained most of them and a whole new area of exploration has been opened up.
The Schubert and Haydn recommendations were particularly rewarding.

Dear Milo,
That is very pleasing to read. Once you start on this road, it becomes a lifetime's journey!
