What to do in Paris
Posted by: Rasher on 28 February 2007
I have to go to Paris for a weekend in April. I hate Paris. I will have plenty of time to kill so please give me some tips of places to go so I won't be bored to death.
There is no time for my missus to come out, and anyway she'll be there herself a few weeks later.
Shall I just take a good book?

You're obviously quite mad so there's no helping you.

So why are you going, are you a masochist ?
Take a coat, hat, scarf, gloves & umberela - and just walk, it's the most magical city on earth. Then, when you get tired of walking, sit and watch everyone else.
There is also a fabulous record shop in rue st michael, the stuff they have in the basement is amazing.

Paris in the Springtime - I should be so lucky.
Walking around is great if the weather is good. Sitting in Cafes watching the world go by, sometimes while you read that book of yours is relaxing too.
You need to get over their habit of being rude to you - it is nothing personal they are rude to everyone!
Find out a concert or two to go to - there must be some music you like on somewhere. Take the trip out to Versaille - at least there will be less crowds there. Go to a football game if that is your interest.
Eat.
Admire the elegant ladies.
You'll be happy but exhausted when you get back if you do all that.
Ian (who likes Paris - but not the rude Parisiennes - and yes I do try and speak French to them)

Don't suppose, while you're over there, you could pick up and bring back, a couple of old canvases by some spanish bloke that have just fallen of the back of a lorry could you ? roll them up & tuck them in your bag, no need to say anything to anyone eh ? Few bob in it for you as well.

I've found that being rude back helps. They understand that - especially in their own language.

I guess you could jump on a train and head south...I much preferred southern france to Paris. It was raining when we arrived and after a pick pocket crew stole my wallet on the underground I was a bit jaded on the place...fortunately my wife spotted the guys passing my wallet around and swore at them until they dropped it and disappeared..phew !
You could catch a show at the Moulin Rouge..
Sit in cafe and watch the world go by..
BUT - Do anything other than sitting in the hotel room reading a book or watching TV - you can do that at home.

I know what you hate about it. Have a meal at Restaurant de Chez Eux on Avenue Loewendahl. Get over it.

A fun restaurant is:

I once was at one restaurant that where famous for how bad it was. The food was hardly cooked and the waiters wrote out the bill on the paper table cloths. Can't remember the name, though. Anyone knew which one I mean?
The real La Coupole is gone, of course. The bohemian artists to...
Or just do as colleague did when he was working in Paris, eat at McDonald's every day!
A wonderful city, it is.

I'm ashamed to say that I have already been to a MacDonalds in Paris on a previous occasion.

Me too. On the Champs Elysees. I needed the loo and decided I could squeeze a cheeseburger in and rest my feet at the same time. The guy serving me presumed wrongly it was to take away. I told him it was to eat in so he huffily pulled the burger out of the bag which he then screwed up and threw into a bin the other side of the kitchen.

There used to be a fabulous Parisian burger place called Pic Pain (I seem to recall one quite near the famous restaurant 'Le Drouot'). This provided crusty rolls, and 'real' burgers, salad, etc, etc.
Sadly I think it is gone.
Don't know how easy it is to find vegetarian fayre in Paris - most French people I know who've met a veggie have more or less regarded them as a visitor from Mars.

There's a great record shop here, and a whole slew of them just south of the river on Boulevard Saint Michel with a decent second-hand selection too.
