Did Lampard just come on to take the penalty or was he on the field all the time?

Gutted. If you think you feel bad now, wait until the tournament starts next summer.
From the day McClaren was appointed, it was waiting to happen. Useless - has he resigned yet?
As I've said ever since Ericcson left, got to be Mourinho.

My thoughts exactly when he was appointed, he was always the last choice and they were pressured into appointed someone quickly by the English papers.

I vote for a flat back eight with a sweeper and player just in front to protect the back eight.

rotf,
You've been talking to McClaren havent you!
I wish I had - playing with no defenders was not the right option.
I think the Tractor Boys would have beaten Crotia tonight - the fact that England's highly paid players were well beaten by Crotia must tell something. We probably had the easiest qualifying group in the tournament and we came third.
Only Peter Crouch looked worthy in that game and the totally ludicrous decision at half time to take Gareth Barry off and leave Lampard on the field, must rank along side bringing Norman Hunter on against Germany (1970) and substituting Gary Lineker (1992).
The FA's stupid decision to allow a Grid-Iron game to ruin the pitch was just another symptom of how wrong we get things in this country.
Sorry Steve, but if I were you I'd resign. However most of all the real loser and culprit should go - Brian Barwick - he's done nothing for anybody so I say to him do the decent thing, be a quitter and 'For God Sake Go'.
Oh well - I've said enough.

Mourinho should have been appointed England manager fifteen minutes into the game, and we'd all be celebrating our qualification for Euro 2008.
Instead, I feel sick.
McClaren??? Drops Beckham after the World Cup, who has his best domestic season for five years; plays Gerrard and Lampard in the same team; plays 4-5-1; gives Carson his competitive debut in a massive game; doesn't want to discuss his future; and looks like a coach driver.

I'm assuming that the coach driver won't resign, as that would mean he wouldn't be paid any (vast) sums of compensation, which will go his way if/when he is "asked to leave"?

There's some arrogant jingoistic tosh being spouted on here. Croatia were far better technically than England and looked a very good team.

They did, but I think they were made to look even better by the home team. I'm not a great footie expert but even I know that the coach driver made some inexplicable decisions.
And the Bristow lookalike who allegedly runs the FA is surely about as effective as his comic-strip doppelganger.
The worst of all this is that the footie bores at work will moan on for hours tomorrow.

Aah well, at least your papers will have a field day kicking the shit out of everyone who has anything to do with the England team.

Though I don't follow football, and only heard the news at midnight, I am sorry to see England beaten. I have no idea of the technicalities, but it does seem a shame that we cannot get a great team which is consisitently fine to play at this level. I have no idea what the solution is, but surely this comes down to choosing the right people to train the team as much as the quality of the players. With a home football such as we have in the UK the player pool ought be provide a consistently high potential, but then I know nothing of it really.
Sorry for the England footie fans.

Our high quality 'home football' involves mostly foreign players.
I wish we'd accept that England is a middle ranking football nation. The world of football includes many teams at the same level, all of whom have a fair chance of beating each other. The fans should stop expecting much more than that level. More importantly the players might have the mentality of having to work, scrap and battle to acheive significant progress.

According to ceefax only 6 of last night's lot are first team regulars at their clubs.

Well he's gone now, so he can get back to coaches of the other kind.

They're all paid too much, etc...
Posted on: 22 November 2007 by rupert bear
Well, they ARE paid too much, and last night they looked just like what they are - a bunch of pampered, talentless, artless, charmless muffins.
Summed up for me by the arrival of some bloke called Bent near the end - whose sole contribution was to barge one of the Croatian defenders out the way. Tackling, ball-play, passing - obviously beyond him.

Yeah? Trouble is, many of the foreign players in the Premiership are paid just as much and play in the same league, yet their home (European) nations have qualified...
Fact is, that over the campaign, management and some players have let us down at some crucial moments.
For instance, the third goal last night was scored when Sol (I think it was) swivelled out of the way of the shot letting the ball carry on to the net, John Terry or Ricardo Carvalho would both have put themselves on the ball to stop it getting there, yes it would have hurt but we'd be in Europe next Summer...

As Bruce says, we have to accept that we are only a mid-ranking football nation (at best), when it comes to international footie.
But our prem league is one of the most competetive & best leagues anywhere.
So, again the question is about limiting the % of foreign players allowed in a team. The conflict between club & country priority is a real stumbling block.
I can't imagine Ferguson being too upset about England not qualifying for Euro 08. He'll just be happy that less of his players will be risking injury whilst on international duty.

Only the ones in the England squad. Name them, there aren't many...
Given that none of the home nations qualified, surely it's not just about the Premiership content of overseas players. I've heard talk of using more championship players but Wales didn't get anywhere either!
I figure that as none of the home nations made it, we should have our own 'domestic' international tournament next Summer, like the home internationals of yore (with stronger crossbars).
Might save Sports Direct going out of business and give Jose something to do plus give us a bit of practice leading up to the World Cup campaign when we get to give Jonny Foreigner a bit of a bloody nose in 2010.
