Very sad news - I remember his Wembley goal. I guess the lasting memory most football fans will have of him. An excellent player who played the game in the right way.

Interesting to read what his wife said (Ian was, of course, managing the Armenian national side):

He had his wish to die in harness. Just over two weeks ago, we flew to Armenia for the Portugal game and I'll always remember what happened at the open training session at the stadium on the day before the game. The stadium was packed to see all the Portuguese stars like Ronaldo, Deco and the rest, but when Ian walked out, they all stood up and shouted his name. It was very moving.

Arsenal top again after 3 years, the patience and grooming starts to produce quality and determination, Wengers a master. The youngsters are becoming men as Tottenham found out today.

And to paraphrase another thread "You can't help messing with Spurs" Big Grin

A 1-1 draw away to Leicester today is a bit of an improvement for QPR but the table still looks a bit depressing already this season.

Mark I thought you'd be a bit happier with that score. The tide is turning?

Yeah, got to be honest Dean, it's better than I expected, but we've moved down a place and are now second from bottom. It just looks a bit depressing already.

How's the table by the way. Have you got it set up yet?

Is it worth having a bet on the hammers for a Champions league slot?

.....Three much needed points for the Mackems on a genuinely emotional day ...Funny old game football though innit? ...Heskey comes back in from the cold for England (amongst much controversy) and his effect on our ability to make and take chances was amazing....

Sunderland sign Kenwynne Jones for 6 mill and many fans thought HOW Much?

...He then proceeds to demonstrate against Reading just what a big strong forward can bring to a team even in the Prem

.....A bit early to compare him to Drogba though as many mackems were doing on leaving the SOL post game though!

It will have to be God won't it?
More importantly how about getting rid of the bus driver?

Avram Grant. It's a coup.

A real and genuine shame he's gone but ultimately it had to happen. Undeniably the best manager we've ever had and a real boost for the Premiership and no doubt his name will be sung at Old Trafford this weekend (by the few) and the Bridge (more so) next, but I don't think he was enjoying it any more. He didn't want Scheva and Ballack but there they were. Grant arrives in the Summer to chip away at his authority a little more. Two shots hitting the post on Tuesday night, finished it for him.

The writing has been on the wall for some time clearly. Still he's got £10m and any job he wants so it's not all bad...

I'm not aware of Grant posessing the skills for introducing 'beautiful' football to Chelsea though...

from what ive seen this season the footballs far from beautiful at the moment - so the new guy (never heard of him) should fit in well. Winker
the ammers might even stand a chance of beating the blues this time........there again ! Roll Eyes

I think he (the special one) is great entertainment value. He made me laugh more than most in footie. I'll miss him, assuming he doesn't get the England job.
Matt.

Unfortunately he was more entertaining than his team.

sky reckon hes going back to portugal with outlook of becoming next national manager there.
he will probably come back to haunt english football to mastermind the exit of england from a major tournament !!

Shame (if you see what I mean) MacLaren has managed four 3-0 results on the trot, or Jose would be in I think.

I agree James. I'm happy he's gone from Chelsea - I couldn't stand the success he brought them! Now if only Wenger would leave Arsenal!

It is a shame McLaren has had some good results recently to disguise his lack of talent. I'd love to see Mourinho in charge of England. Whatever you think of his football, he has that winning mentality.

Not a bad result again today for Rangers, a 1-1 draw at home to league leaders Watford. But the table still looks rather depressing and I feel that the F1 connection will sack Gregory soon. I understand there is West London based coach who is looking for work at the moment!

He wouldn't even have to move his children out of their school!

Are you hoping he'd bring a Ukrainian centre-forward and German midfield player with him?

Er, no, definitely not ROTF!

What is Abramovich doing?

He picks both Drogba and Kalou up front with the footballer formerly known as Andriy Shevchenko, drops Malouda for Sidwell, and Ben-Haim's nowhere near as good as Huth, let alone Gallas.

Very strange. Five behind Man Utd and seven behind Arsenal already.

Well, there seems to be a lot of jumping on the bandwagon of Chelsea's recent struggles, albeit relatively short term, and totally uncalled for.

Personally, I can't get enough of it! May their struggles continue. They stand for everything that is bad about football at the moment - the whole ethos about money buying success. In fairness to them I do appreciate the fact that as a team they work extremely hard on the pitch together, but at the start of each season we all say "yes, the top 4 will be between Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea & Liverpool". Well, if one of them (or more!) struggles then so much the better. Qualification for the "Champions" League (joke) by finishing in the top four (yes I know there is extra qualifying for 3rd and 4th placed teams) just gives the teams even more money and moves them further away from the rest of the teams in the Premiership. More money generally = more success.

I mean, who are Chelsea? Until a few bob were invested recently what had they won? Hardly anything. Mickey Mouse team. There is no real history or tradition there, not compared to any of the following: Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Man City, Everton, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Sunderland, Leeds, Nottingham Forest, to name a few but all in my eyes "bigger" football clubs.

Chelsea for the drop!! Get in there!

Hang on.

Wasn't it just a few years ago that everyone was bemoaning the likelihood of a Man U/Arsenal 2-way battle at the start of every season? Where were the challengers?

So in the early Nineties Chelsea got a bit of money (much of it due to the generosity of Mathew Harding) to spend and some canny leadership showed itself. Instead of leading with Mark Stein and John Spencer we took on Glen Hoddle, Gullit, Vialli, and the great man Zola. Desailly and LeBoeuf were an outstanding pair at the back. Jimmy Floyd and Gudjohnsen were banging in record numbers of goals. So, gradually the player, coach and team quality built, we win a few cups, get right up there in the league without winning it and we're still known as the nearly team. Until 3 years ago RA steps in with really huge amounts of cash and all of a sudden everyone calls them an overnight success. The success was a long time coming and probably largely due to the observational and man management skills of Jose not our new overdraft facility.

For years and years and years Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle and plenty of others have had huge amounts of cash pumped into them at various times, sometimes more effectively than others. Chelsea have used it well (most of the time), as did Blackburn some years back. Chelsea won and kept winning, just like Blackburn didn't. So what?

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Turin, Inter and Milan. All "rotters" are they 'cos they've got a few bob and bought their titles? Wigan and Reading bought their way into the Premiership, what a bunch of "rotters" right?

Chelsea win the Premiership fifty years after the first win (conceding only 7 goals in the season and (I think) losing just one game)) and all of a sudden it's "Johnny come lately, where's the history? Who are you? And this tired argument has been spouted repeatedly by know nothing, band wagon jumping irksome little twats ever since. Chelsea's appearance among the big boys and Jose's style and management skills on and off the pitch have done more to make the Premiership entertaining (Jesus, anybody who managed to coax some life out of Arsene Wenger was doing something right) than anything else since the introduction of the money SKY brought all those years ago. And don't tell me it's tainted the game. I saw more boring, shitty, crappy games on shitty, crappy pitches in shitty, crappy grounds rendered from torn up Nissen huts twenty years ago than I do now. Whoever was playing. Yet I have seen many entertaining Chelsea games over the last 30 years, if only because we could be 3-0 up with twenty minutes to go and still not win. I know I saw it happen. Or like just about ten years ago when we were 2-0 down to Liverpool at half time in The Cup and won 4-2.

History? History!? The Victorians make great history but I don't expect Prince Albert to pop up and score the winner against Wigan on a Tuesday night. You might as well say Brazil are a great football team but where were they a hundred years ago eh? Tossers. And history does precisely Jack Shit for Sunderland, Leeds and Forest right now. And lets face it, you can be pretty selective over Liverpool's history depending whether you're hunting for the more or less successful periods and Everton have for a long time been their underachieving little brother.

Clearly I do not think Jose's leaving is a good thing. Neither the appointment of Grant if it is a long term issue. I suspect we are more likely to remain among the chaff for much of the season now. I hope RA sees the sense in leaving the management to his managers.

Finally, among the top teams, I seem to see more English players regularly on the pitch at Chelsea than the others: Lamps, Terry, Bridge, Cole, Cole, SWP, Sidwell, Sinclair and many teams around the country benefit from loans of our younger players. England have then benefited from the development of Joe Cole, JT and SWP into match winning or saving players.

Surely not a bad thing?

And every Spurs supporter is still just resentful and jealous because of the belief that RA was considering Spurs before Chelsea, until he saw where he was going to have to park his car every other weekend.
