250 into NBL's does not go!
Posted by: blythe on 16 July 2003
My NBL's arrived today in gorgeous, (I mean GORGEOUS) Rosewood finish and for now, my old faithful 250 (well, one of them) is driving the NBL's.
HOWEVER! After a rather loud listen to "Comfortably Numb" (Pink Floyd) at a very comfortable 3 o-clock on the 252 volume knob (LP12 playing Vinyl) the 250 overheated and cut out! 1/2 an hour later, it had re-set but was still VERY hot.....
So, in short, the question of "what is the minimum requirement Amplifier for a pair of NBL's" I would say more than a 250........
I was listening at quite high levels, but it was only into a couple of tracks at that high level before the amp gave up :-(
OK, I need to go active 3x250's or passive 300 but I was shocked at how hot the 250 had become. I mean too hot to touch!
Looks like a new amp or two is needed :-(
Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Blythe,
Are you aware that there is gang of escaped convicts currently dragging their leg irons round your neck of the woods ? Apparently they all attended the same woodwork class in prison from whence sprung a deep appreciation of anything to do with rosewood. Their MO is simple : Find a house with evidence of rosewood (they use specially trained bloodhounds), wait till 3am, cut through any bars or razor wire, disable all alarms, slaughter the Rottweilers and in they go.
Of course once the "rosewood gang" have penetrated your domain it would be rude of them not to have it away with your precious things, pets and family before leaving a few "mementos" to mark the occasion. In short your NBL's, purely by virtue of their rosewood finish, are putting you and all you hold dear in grave danger.
In NZ rosewood is frowned upon as being too showy and ostentatious. I bought a pair in beautiful but understated birch because I assumed this finish would attract less attention from our less sophisticated but no less brutal hi-fi underworld. Ironically it is their very birchiness, I have since learned, that makes them a prime target.
Wait a minute ! I have just had the most amazing idea. Why don't we swap ? I know what you are thinking - "yes that is an amazing idea, but I have only just had the roof put back on the gaff and parked the Titan crane back in the garage" but think laterally man ! The bit we want to swap is the FINISH, and the FINISH is a VENEER. All we have to do is steam off and roll the veneers into tubes, swap the tubes by courier and then bostik/bluetak/nail/rivet them back on and hey presto ! I guarantee that even your blind grandmother won't be able to tell the difference from the back of the room (with the lights off).
Waddayathink ?

Dem won't be for a couple of weeks. I'm making sure I'm used to the sound of one 250 before I start spending even more money

I'll keep you posted ;-)

It's a good job I have a dedicated 50,000 Volt spur to my security system - coupled with the "high pressure internal sound wave" (read ridiculously high listening volume levels) and that my Rottweiler's have some kind of genetic abnormality that means they've grown to twice normal size.....
Next time I'm in NZ I'll bring my NBL's for the swap, OK?

Don't get too carried away Blythe I think Mr Pang's positive comments are with referce to the Nbl's rosewood finish & aesthetic appeal........not the ..um ...er decor?
Ah... he was just jesting... nice cosy place you got there too, Blythe.

Good listening, the music's groovin' frightfully more.

Blythe
What was the happy outcome of the "not enough" tribulations?
Are you still using 1 NAP250 or did you go active / new NAP

Due to time or rather the lack of it, I am still running a single 250 and being watchful of volume levels.
I have not sufferred another cut-out so far!
I do still plan to audition 3x250's Vs a single 300 at some time in the not too distant future and make a decision based on my findings.
Taking much longer than I ever thought!
However, the single 250 into the NBL's is marvelous anyway. I just suspect it'll blow my socks off when I finally upgrade the amp(s).
