Any one see this on BBC4 tonight? Interesting chap bloody good guitarist. I don't know much about him apart from his involvement in Fairport. Any recomendations where to start on his solo stuff?

Richard Thompson is a bit more than just a "bloody good guitarist." Simply put, he is about the best there is at what he does. Outragiously beyond--! To find out more I suggest his informative website, BeesWeb, at richardthompson-music.com. In my collection I particularly like "Rumour and Sigh." But through his webpages there are available some live double sets that may provide a good overview of his work. Congratulations and Bon Voyage Mr. Big, you've found the mother lode.

I have just bought over the web Amnesia(vinyl) I'll wait and see what that brings. I did an Ebay search and pick one at random.
You have to start somewhere.

Underrated National Treasure
Where do I start!
Unique, accomplished guitar style. Witty lyrics and dark, dark songs of love and loss.
Check out 'When The Spell Is Broken' for starters.
There is an excellent 3 CD compilation called 'Watching The Dark' which is a good place to start.
The very recently released album 'The Old Kit Bag' maintains the standards of superb acoustic and electric guitar, with thought provoking lyrics.
And he's delightfully unassuming, live as well. Almost appears embarrased when he takes to the stage.
Long may he run.
P.S. The doumentary was on a digital channel last night, and is scheduled for 10.40 on BBC4 tonight (Saturday) as well.

Richard Thompson
I'm a big fan of Richard Thompson. My favorite albums are "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" and "Shoot Out the Lights", both with his ex-wife, Linda. The more recent stuff is great, too. I like "Mirror Blue" (especially the cut "Mingus Eyes"), and "Mock Tudor". The box set that J.N. mentions has a lot of great stuff, including a good selection of the first two mentioned albums, but I'm more of an "album buyer". I like to hear the tunes in the order in which they were originally issued. I think that, at least since Sgt. Pepper, most artists conceive of their albums as a coherent whole, with the songs presented to make some sequential sense. Also very worth tracking down is the tribute compilation "The World is a Wonderful Place - The Songs of Richard Thompson", which is mainly folk-oriented. It's on the Green Linnet label.
Enjoy!

I can only support previous comments - he's the governor as far as rock guitar is concerned - I have most of his albbums and particularly like songs such as Beeswing, Vincent Black Lightning etc but there are also a lot of darker songs from earlier times. However, best of all is to go and see him live - I have taken a number of friends to his performances who left amazed by the man, his humilty and friendliness and his sheer brilliant playing - the sounds he can make from a guitar are legendary and he is on tour in the UK very soon -check out his previously mentioned website for dates and venues

Thanks for the replies guys. I knew of him without really having heard his music except via Fairport. Still I have the fun of discovering something new which is always good. From what I saw and heard on the documentary I think I won't be disappointed. I see on his discography he seems to have collaberated with almost every body.
Well thanks again

interesting, I've never heard of him. I'll have to check him out. I love good guitar especially if it's from someone from the 60's

Wolf - check out his website (listed previously in this thread) - it has audio downloads and also a list of tour dates. Richard is now based on you side of the pond, on the West Coast I think, so it shouldn't be too hard for you to get to see him live

I'm a big fan - and I second the recommendation to catch him live. I've got tickets for his gig in Edinburgh in a few weeks. The new album is great, but I'm always frustrated by the number of people who just can't get past his voice, which put me off at first as well.
I'm just delighted he's no longer being produced by Mitchell Froom, one of the great scallywags of modern musical production. His descent into the hell of overproduction I'm sure warrants another topic...

Are you up for another gig partner if I can persuade the other half she wants to make it a long weekend ? What time is the gig btw ?
Alan, without any doubt - can't recall exactly when the gig is, but if you are interested I think you'll have to move incredibly fast - tickets were getting scarce when T. bought mine (she bought 2 but isn't so keen, so she may offer it up to a friend at work; if he doesn't take it, I'll bear you in mind should it happen to be sold out).
As a side observation, I've noticed that the Queens Hall records each gig onto DAT. If only I could find out where those tapes go...

Alan,
My email has been playing up for the best part of the last week (and as I've been working away from the office most of last week I've had patchy forum access) so if you can give me a call tomorrow (Tuesday) night re: the gig and meeting up. I'll make sure I'm in from around 7pm tomorrow (after my daily run - hey ho, gotta get in shape for the big day, less than three weeks now... )

Brighton Dome gig report.
140 minutes of PFM. It took a couple numbers to sort the sound out but then it was superb, although we were to one side. Bass was siesmic. I only know one RT album so recognising tunes is impossible. I had heard Shoot Out the LIghts? before and this was the highlight for me. This man is unbelieveable it was real treat for me and Sally (the boss).
Put him on your 30 things to do before.......
Regards

Yeah, it was funny that, Alan! One of those strange coincidences, eh? Still, as you say, fantastic gig. The first time I've seen him with a complete band. Tighter than a phaal dump, you could say.
It was indeed great to meet up with you, and enjoy a cracking gig. It's a pity that we only had the short while on the Sunday to play some tunes (thanks again for your constructive criticism re: preamps and the like) and talk music. Tahra actually thought you were "really normal, for a forum person" and apologises for dragging me off in the '65 Mustang. Mind you, I'd rather have stayed in and listened to tunes than drive that behemoth any longer than necessary - despite the burbling V8.
Anyway, hopefully you enjoyed yourself, though again apologies for not having more time on the Sunday... next time we meet up I'll have dedicated mains, at least, plus maybe a much-delayed new preamp...
Hope you're enjoying the cds - the "Semi Detached Mock Tudor" live album is a peach!
All the best, hope the camera kit etc. is exactly what you were looking for,
John
