Peace and Love

Chaps
I have have quite a good day today.
Mrs Mick and I went to Banbury to attend the Banbury Run which is an annual run of pre 1931 vintage motorcycles and they depart from a local school and return back there, usually after a couple of hours.
I purchased some bits for my bike at the auto jumble and then had a good gawp at hundreds of old bikes. The bikes get better every year and it is good to see younger chaps entering instead of old guys as of present.
Then we went to Leamington Spa, where we once lived 25 yrs ago, to visit some old friends for a good old chin wag.
We were saddened to hear a young neighbour recently died and pleased to hear that some oik who we disliked is now in clink. Evidently he got a 3 year stretch for child pornography crimes. I never trusted the man and most people whom I take a dislike to are dubious types. If I dislike anyone on this forum, be assured they are bits of ruff.
We then return home via Leamington Spa and saw a hippie festival of love and peace taking place. They sang wierd songs and passed flowers around to each other and were generally very nice and gentle people. I bought a bowl of lentil something or other which will probably give me the runs tomorrow.
I quite liked these hippies but my own view is that they are wide open to exploitation and domination by "normal" types.
What do you think of hippies ?
Regards
Mick

Dear Mick,
I honestly have never met one, but that particular privation comes from a basically rural existence.
I know the the New Age Travelers are no blessing, but they are not "proper" hippies!
I may live in a city now, but my outlook is not particualrly gregarious! I think you can take the man out of country, but you will never take the country out of the man!

The problem with hippies is that, for the most part, they have no understanding of science, so they believe all sorts of rubbish about the healing power of crystals and such. They also have appalling taste in music.

Reading this whilst listening to some Gong!
As to the hippies - good luck to them and their life style choice.

Sounds like you had a good day, Mick!
As to hippies, I don't think you can have a better guiding principle to live by than 'peace and love'. Those who exploit them have to live with themselves but I'm sure the hippes will forgive them.
Good luck to them.
Peace and love, man!

Never understood the culture myself - still these Ozrics records are pretty good

I admire the hippy ideals of peace and love but it's a devil of a job putting them into practice in this mad, bad world. I agree that many hippies are wide open to exploitation (see above re new age remedies and crystal healing).
Can't say that I like much hippy music - most of it sounds silly nowadays. From that era, give me the clear-eyed intelligence of Joni Mitchell, or the visionary non sequiturs of Neil Young anyday.

'They're selling hippy wigs in Woolworths, man. The greatest decade in the history of mankind is about to end, and as Presuming Ed has consistently pointed out, we have failed to paint it black'.

I always like the bit where there appears to be "matter" in the sink!

I was at a Pagan wedding this weekend, standing in a circle on an iron-age hill fort and facing each element of the earth. Of course it all seems very daft, but standing up there seeing the sea on one side and the rolling countryside on the other and acknowledging the earth as an all powerful and beautiful body, it sort of makes sense. I don't think the hippies have it wrong, but it is a detached world and philosophy that is difficult to adhere to in this modern world. One thing that is clear is that they are not a threat to anyone, and therefore we should be grateful that there are people who are not hell-bent on destroying the world and everyone in it! I think it would benefit everyone to think more of their spiritual side.
I was in Glastonbury a few weeks ago and we overheard some people talking about some crystals they had, and that these crystals were being used for a healing ceremony, but they were too powerful and stopped them sleeping at night. All this with hushed tones and sincere frowns. When we got away we went around the corner and pissed ourselves laughing.

But you can't knock it - I might think they are deluded, but they're obviously wonderful gentle and caring people. They just make me laugh.

So belief in crystals is delusional but belief in ghosts isn't?
Hmmm...
As for things to laugh at, last night I was roaring at the tale of a sad person I know who forked out £60 to visit a 'haunted' house then a further £80 to have her photo with 'ectoplasm' on it analysed.

Bob -

I actually do believe that crystals have an effect, but that the effect is from within as a reaction to the crystal rather than the crystal as an energy....but let's not get into that otherwise you'll hound me even more. It's just that they were
so serious about it

Yes, that is funny.

I am soon about to fly out to Spain for a while and you do get a lot of old hippies in their late fifties out there.
They usually buy a small house and just while the days away.
They have certainly got a drugs market going out there, you can pick up anything for a few pence and spend your time totaly zonked out.
Good way to end your days.

Just make sure you don't pack it for the return journey.
