For those who bemoan the UK's lack of sporting success

I've been there this week and it shows we have (again) a great chance of picking up more golds in Beijing than any other sport.
However, does the sport get shown in this light?
Sporting headlines are only ever made when Tour tests come back positive and the BBC, for instance, had as their lead sport story this morning, a one month old story about Duane Chambers turning to, what this time, Rugby. Some routine Rugby League fixtures, some more leugue results from Rugby Union then ... oh... GB have a few more golds in the World Champs.

Agreed, a fabulous effort from the UK team members!

....Re swimming pools ....there's a new pool just being finished right next to the Stadium Of Light in Sunderland apparently it's been built to Olympic specifications and has a separate specialist diving pool. Also the floor can be raised or lowered depending on what depth is required.
...A bit out of the way for those down south though....

We have a new pool in Crawley apparently it's been built to Olympic specifications(for training) and can be separated to make a specialist diving pool as the floor and walkways can be raised or lowered depending on what depth and set up is required.
Unfortunately the mechanism for said raising and lowering keeps failing.

Is Joe-public tax payer to fund all these marvelous sporting facilities?

Just curious, George

George

So who should fund them if not the people who use them? I may be reading between the lines but I sense you object?

Regards

Many of these facilities are indeed funded by Joe Tax Payer. And rightly so.
A huge number of these facilities are also funded by Joe Gullible Lotto Ticket Buyer.

Returning briefly to the matter in hand....it was good to see coverage by the Beeb (if not in the newspapers) and I think the enthusiasm for competitive cycling is really growing here. Witness the intrest in the TdF last year. We are becoming a top cycling nation and that is good, not least for encouraging recreational use too.

As for 'Joe Gullible Lotto player' well that is me. I've always viewed our reg lotto ticket as a donation to sport and charity with just a twist attached. No harm in that.
