Jools Holland Hootenanny

Posted by: Officer DBL on 01 January 2010

I thought it was disappointing.

I am so glad I have never wasted any money on Florence and the Machine if last night's performances were anything to go by. I feel much the same way about Kasabian. Muse sounded like a cross between the Glitter Band and Ultravox and I figure that Dizzy Rascal is definately an acquired taste.

As for Boy George, 'nuff said.

The high point for me was Jools more or less ignoring that Revron character.

Never mind, Happy New Year to all.

I haven't finished it yet.The interchange with Rivron "haven't seen you since last New Year' seems to sum him up.
Rodrigo Y Gabriella were good, "yes just 2 guitars made that sound" quote was apt.

I would quite like a Florence for Christmas. The Dopey Rascal / Nirvana song was excellent, IMO. Al Murray saying "Hootenanny" to every question was not funny last year, and made me cringe this year. Jools got visibly more pissed as the night wore on.

Not the best.

Agreed all above, especially the Florence Machine krap. IMO Jules is getting well passed his sell by date.

I was just about to turn it off when Rodrigo Y Gabriella started - WOW, shame on me as I never heard of them before, definitely be looking them up later.

Anyhow Los Lobos on the CDX2 soon turned the night into a far better hootenanny ... problem was this morning it looks like my Macallan sprung a leak last night.

Saw Tom Jones, who I always alike to hear, but glanced at other bits and then gave up. Was not tempted when I saw the list of bands on the net beforehand.

I think it is time for the BBC to try and find another music flagship programme. While I have discovered a few bands over the last few years through 'Later', there are huge areas of music you just know will not get on the show, for instance could you ever imagine forum favourites Porcupine Tree ever being invited on the show?

R y G were great, Kasabian Ok as for the rest a WOS. Jules couldn't ask a decent question if his life depended on it.

Mike-B are you sure you didn't leave the stopper out and it evaporated? Roll Eyes

I tuned in and out but it didn't grab me.

Listened on the iPlayer - liked Florence and the Machine, but little else - think they could get a better presenter; not keen on Jools Holland - not sure why a presenter is necessary - my favourite ever music programme was Disco 2 - where they used subtitles like on TOTP2 to let you know who you were listening to.

What was the point of the bloke in a suit with a clock on his head miming to the songs ?

Frankly the since the end of The Tube UK TV's music shows have paled in comparison with Germany's Rockpalast, complete concerts new and archive every Saturday night on WDR. If you have a satellite that can get Astra 1 (I think) have a look sometime.

Upcoming programming

Not such a great set of shows showing over the next month, but have seen many excellent complete concerts broadcast showing Van Der Graaf Generator, David Bowie, R.E.M, Orbital, Page & Plant, etc.

bands list (incomplete from what I can see)

I thought most of it was terrible - usual celebs in studio audience and a lot of average stuff such as Tome Jones and Boy George (do we want to keep hearing The Green Green Grass of Home and Karma Chameleon?).

However, I second the support for Rodrigo y Gabriella - I bought their 2006 CD/DVD of the same name and can very much recommend it - have a listen their version of Stairway to Heaven!

With you lads on that. I haven't watched a Jools show in a long time.

Did you know that it is recorded in September!

I don't think the Hootenanny was recorded as far back as September. A friend of mine plays guitar in Dizzee Rascal's band and another friend's son is his drum tech. I will find out when it was recorded.

I thought that this year's Hootenanny was pretty poor. OGWT was a great programme as was 'Sight and Sound In Concert' and 'Rock Goes to College'.

I've not watched "Later" for quite some time. I think the best current music prog is "Live at Abbey Road" which has introduced me to a few new (and not so new) acts.
