Used CDPs

Posted by: Arun Mehan on 24 January 2002

Since I have not heard from David Quigley, I've started searching for used CDPs. What are your impressions/opinions of the Marantz machines, specifically the 63SE and 67SE? Is the 67SE worth an extra $10 or no? I'm not cheap but on a budget and have no clue about either model.

Thanks.

Also, I'm asking again about Rega Juras. Impressions/opinions would be very helpful.

Probably worth the extra $10. The 67SE is a little newer, so I'd pay that extra little bit. When I first started looking into CD Players, this was one of the first to really catch my attention. Very good player for the money.

Arun,

I meant to post earlier that the Arcam integrated has been sold.

Will continue to keep a look out in case something crops up.

Arun,

I had to buy a budget CDP two years ago. I listened to a Marantz 60somethingSE, which I found uninvolving and distant. I purchased instead a Cambridge Audio CD4SE, which was about the same price. It's no longer made, but I understand that the successor D500SE has a similar price (Cdn$500-600) and sonic characteristics. Various Cambridge players also seem to be available used, see for example canuckaudiomart.com

The CD4SE is miles behind even a bare CD5, not surprising at only about 1/6th the price. However, it's shortcomings don't get in the way of making music. I'm quite content to keep this machine until the smoke from the format war settles sufficiently for Naim to tread in these waters.

Cheers,

John Schmidt

(Sorry , missed this thread earlier).

Buy the Marantz 63 and spend the extra $10 on parts. It is frighteningly easy to make this player (and the 67 which is nearly identical internally) frightenenly good; as in, wipe the floor with less than stellar competitors and have time over to pick one's teeth.

Read how to here, under 'the clock hack', soon to be updated.

Used these for a couple of years in both all Naim and Rega systems.

Quite exciting; they play music with verve and jump. However, there's too much boomy bass, especially in small to medium rooms.

Contrary to source first ideology, Juras got worse as the system improved, IMO. They were fantastic with Rega Planet/Mira. Unrefined, but fun with CD3.5/FC/Nait3 and rather hopeless with CDX/72/hi/140.

In other words, as long as they're not asked to do too much and you don't mind phat bass, the Juras are a good speaker but won't keep up with upgrades.

I stand by what I said about them on this forum and have more thoughts on them @

web page

Presumeably you've got a line on a 2nd hand pair of these, what else is available? Unless your room is huge, I think the Alya or Ela are much better speakers, as far as Regas are concerned.

best,
