New Speaker Help Please.
Posted by: Nick Riley on 10 November 2003
I currently have 202/200/Hi-Cap/NAPSC/CDX2 plus AV2/150/175. My current front speakers are a pair of Roksan Ojan 3's which I'm looking to replace. Budget would be around 2500-3000 pounds. Naim speakers are not an option as I live in Japan and shipping that kind of weight is out of the question! Most other brands can be sourced here. All advice appreciated.

Nick,
The best speakers around the £3k mark are the Neat MFS's,
HOwever with a budget of around £3k I would consider an XPS2 first and spending the balance on a pair of speakers.
Regards

Hi Nick, having auditioned lots of speakers around the £2k-£3k mark, I would wholeheartedly recommend the B&W Nautilus 804.

How on earth can you dish out advice without knowing the following.
1. Does Nick want his speakers up against the wall or out from it.
2. Does he prefer light or heavy bass.
3. What size is his room.
SBL's are great up against a wall but useless away from it. I hope you get my drift.
Regards
Mick

Mick,
In answer to your questions:
1: Close to the wall
2: Heavy Bass
3: Right now 5M x 3.5M, Although I am looking to move soon. Being in Tokyo doesn't mean I will get something a lot bigger though.
Sorry - I should I have given these indicators first before asking. I hope now, I can get some more advice.
Thank you everybody,
Nick.

This may not be the answer you are looking for.
Spend most of your money near the front end. An XPS or XPS2 will transform your CDX. That is one of the best upgrades ever.
You could buy a good pair of Briks for around £500 and they go up against a wall and have really good natural bass.
The XPS and Briks would produce a brilliant sound.
Regards
Mick

Nick,
If you have an interest to SBL, please contact me. I do not have enough space for sbl now, and have to pay tuition of university...

Thank you everybody for your advice - most of which ended up in Private Posts. The 'budget' I mentioned ended up as a complete work of fiction. I visited the UK at the end of November and did in fact end up buying a XPS2 which has know been sitting in my system for 3 weeks. Simply stunning VFM in my opinion.
I did also buy some new speakers which I am still waiting for but after hearing (and comparing) had no competition, at least for me.
I will shortly be the proud owner of a pair of Neat MF5's.
I would ask what my next upgrade should be but I'm frightened what it would force me to spend!

Hi Nick,
I'm in a similar position to you being overseas (middle east) where it is not easy to audition/buy gear, and where I may have to resort to shipping some spkrs out without even hearing them - some of us have to rely on you guys to guide us!
Like you I'm in the market for spkrs up to £5k - the budget started lower - but you know how it is, so your experience is particularly pertinent.
I'm looking for spkrs for CDX2/XPS2,282,H/C,250.
I see a lot of people rave about Neat MFS/MF5 - let us into the secret - what's so good about them? What other spkrs did you listen to and why did you finally pick the Neats? Is there a big difference between the MFS and MF5? The standmounters would certainly be cheaper to ship for me!
I would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks
Karl

Nick,
I'm also looking for new speakers (see other thread).
I'm very interested in your experience with the MFS. Have you also auditionned the Harbeth Compact 7?
Thanks
Jean-Marc
